Despair I tell you

I am beginning to despair. This scene is never going to end. Stiles, please just run naked through the woods so Derek can catch you so i can end this damn scene.

I was hoping to get more done tonight, but I got distracted by Word with Friends. Then my cat decided I had typed enough and sat on both my wrists, as she does.

Tomorrow I acquire plywood and MDF for the padded headboard I am making. I think after the headboard, I will be make some fabric cornices for the dining room. I'm going to have extra plywood around so why not use it up? Also, full curtains wouldn't look right in that room. I'm thinking something like this cornice.

Also, I am ready for spring. I want to put in miniture blueberry bushes in my front bed. Also, I want to see how the tulips I planted in the two big planters out front look when they bloom. Finally, I'm curious to see if any of the trees we planted in the fall made it. If not, I'll be doing another order with Arbor Day (for half price replacements). But none of that can happen until SPRING.

Come on weather. Turn warm. I know the people in New England would appreciate it.

Yeah trees!

On Monday, we received a bunch of trees from the Arbor Day Foundation to plant. If you want to plant some trees at your house, I seriously recommend getting them from the Arbor Day Foundation. They'll be smaller than what you can buy from the store, but they are cheap, cheap, cheap. I bought 6 trees for less that $60 (I became a member so got discounted prices, which paid for itself first order). I also got two free forsythia and a red maple (which I am giving away). In addition to trees, they have several bushes and shrubs they sell.

Trees came, which of course meant I had to make MacBeth jokes about how they were invading our porch. The red crape myrtle I got is tiny. Like ridiculously tiny. I was expecting a tree twig like the rest, maybe 1-1.5 feet tall. Nope. I got something that about 3-4 inches tall. Even if I hadn't planned on putting mulch around it, I would have had to to keep from running it over with the lawn mower.

The other issue is that one of my hazelnut trees didn't come. I ordered three and go two. These things are the largest of the trees/shrubs that came so I definitely notice how one is missing. It's too late in the year for them to send another in time for them me to get it in the ground. I'm going to email Arbor Day to see what we can do. I plan on ordering some more shrubs in the spring (I am serious getting rid of the awful, generic landscaping put in as quickly as I can). Maybe I can get my third hazelnut then.

I am so happy to actually be putting plants in. I cannot wait until spring. Mostly because that's when I'll find out if anything survived. ^^;

Gardening

I have finally planted some of the plants in the raised bed. The plan I was following called for a large contained, so last weekend we got a Jack Daniels whiskey barrel that had been cut in half. This thing was the real deal. How do I know? Because we left it in the back of the car on a hot afternoon. Four hours later, the car smelled like a brewery.

Thank goodness we didn't get pulled by the cops. We would have had an interesting time trying to explain that.

Of course, said whiskey barrel did not have draining holes drilled into it. And of course, our drill bit set has gone missing. One thing about owning a house: you travel to Lowes and Home Depot so much that you begin to think you should just set up house there. With the new bit set I got holes drilled. All I need to do is get EVEN MORE dirt (I have bought 15 bags of the stuff so far this year, and I'm not done yet). Then I'll be able to plant the rest of the plants.

So what have I got in the ground? In the raised bed I have broccoli, cabbage, lemon balm, and onions. I do not know if the onions will make it. They seem kind of pathetic. At least they actually sprouted this time. This is a vast improvement over the last few times I've tried to grow onions from seed.

I also have some plants in the front beds. These come from the local gardening club. I have lobelia of some sort, in blue and been balm of some sort. It'll be interesting to see what color the bee balm blooms.

Things I still have to plant: violas, pole beans, paprika peppers, lettuce, ancho peppers, borage, and nasturtiums. Lots of planting in my future!

Lettuce!

I will be traveling all of next week to Hawaii for work. This of course, means 16 hours in a plane there and an red-eye on the way back. Oh the things I do for work! As I told my co-workers, I will learn to play a sad, sad song on the ukelele since my violin seems out of place given the circumstances. :D

I went ahead and started the oak leaf lettuce today because of the trip and when I get back I get to start 21 violas. Lots and lots of violas. The weekend after that I'll probably make the raised bed and start planting. EXCITING.

Day after day

tsaiko: Gif of a lemming falling off an edge (badass)
Cabbage and broccoli started indoors. It was raining this morning, but was nice enough this afternoon for me to do some yardwork. There are daffodils in our front beds and all interspersed among the English ivy that has taken over the back slope of our yard. Tomorrow I am going to attempt to remove some of the ivy without damaging the daffodils. My goal is to remove it slowly enough and get enough bushes/small trees/plants/ground cover in there to keep the slop from eroding when I do. I do not want what some of my neighbors have: a bare slope that is quickly eroding into their yard.

I also did some light cleaning and am finally, finally going to get my sister's Christmas presents in the mail. Where did 2 months go?

I also wrote a bit more on the guivere story this morning. I changed a few things and settled a few more in my mind. I worked on another story while in New York, but I swear, it is some of the most stilted writing I have put on paper. Ugh. I definitely need to rewrite it at some point. I also found a story I'd started at some point with super powered twins: one a superhero and the other a supervillain. I get the feeling they were cloned from someone, but I don't remember exactly the background I had going for this. Oh well. Just means I can create a new one.

I can has garden?

One thing about owning a house that I am going to absolutely love is the backyard. We don't have a huge backyard, but it's nothing to sneeze at either. This year I'm going to put in just one 8' x 4' raised bed. Next year will be another. I'll do one a year until I have four beds with a mixture of flowers, herbs, and vegetables in it. Then I'll rotate which bed has which plants in it to keep the soil from wearing out and the plant diseases to a minimum.

This year the plants I am putting in the raised bed are:
- Ancho Peppers
- Borage
- Broccoli
- Oriental Cabbage
- Lemon Balm
- Dwarf Oakleaf Lettuce
- Nastriums
- Green Onions
- Oregano <- I haven't fully decided whether to do this or thyme
- Paprika Peppers
- Pole/Bush Beans
- Violas

I have bought seeds for everything but the oregano, mostly because I am still unsure whether I am going to grow oregano. I had to order some of the seed from Seed Savers because some of the plants (like borage) are impossible to find at stores or even most nurseries.

I'm not growing borage because of it's taste, which most people say is like cucumber. I have never tried it. I'm growing it because it's supposed to be attractive to bees, and I want bees to visit the other plants in my garden. The next bed I grow I'll probably plant bee balm since that flowers later and also attracts bees. The third bed will probably have zinnias in it or asters. That way I have stuff that attracts bees blooming in spring, summer, and fall.

I cannot wait. :D
tsaiko: Gif of a lemming falling off an edge (gourd!)
We have a bathroom painted! There's a few places that need minor touch ups, but for the most part it looks awesome. The color was called Gothic Amethyst. [livejournal.com profile] miome made the comment that it sounds like a goth stripper's stage name. :D

The house has the worst molding I've ever seen. It's covered in about 8 layers of paint and half the time no miter cuts were done, so the molding just abuts the next piece of molding. Blech. Eventually we'll replace it, but right now we'll live with it.

Sometimes I can just look at a plant and tell you what family it is. Might not know the exact plant, but I can guess the family (and sometimes genera). I'm really good at identifying those in the nightshade family (Solanaceae) and can usually identify those in the aster family (which isn't that hard because there are so many of them). Recently, I discovered that okra was in the mallow family, which is the same family that gives us hibiscus. All it takes is to look at the flowers to see the resemblance. They are really striking.

So imagine my surprise when I saw a large, showy white flower with a dark red center growing up under the trees in the English ivy infested slope that is 1/3 of the backyard. I took one look and went "That's a hibiscus. Do we have a native a hibiscus in this area?" The reason I thought it was a native was because the house sits on thick, red clay. It's impossible to get non-native species (except English ivy -_-) to grow there without a lot of help. This flower hadn't had help in over a year, because I guarantee the people we bought the house from did not do any sort of actually gardening.

Turns out we do get hibiscus and it is native. What's growing on the slope is most likely Halberdleaf hibscus. It can grow in clay as long as it's moist clay. Given the amount of mosquitoes in my backyard, it doesn't surprise me to find out that that area is moist and doesn't drain well. I'm hoping it'll reseed for next year and I'll be able to get some cuttings. I would love to have more of those plants up in that area. It's certainly prettier than the English ivy.

It's also nice because now I know exactly what conditions exist under all that ivy. When I clean it out, I can plant more natives (again, I've got clay. Not much else is going to thrive there).

Next weekend we should have internet! Maybe that way I'll be able to update from the house instead of waiting till I get back to the apartment.

I give up

tsaiko: Gif of a lemming falling off an edge (gourd!)
Three times I've tried to plant onions and three times it has failed. I'm beginning to think I just got a bad batch of seed. Oh well. Went to the farmer's market and picked up three seedlings to go in those pots instead. I now have chives, lime mint, and chocolate mint. I hope to grow enough mint this year that I can start making mint sugar syrup again. I also found instructions to turn sugar syrup into sorbet. Mint sorbet. Mmmmm...

I prepped and got started the beef roast for tonight. I'm cooking it in the crock pot with potatoes, carrots, celery, canned tomatoes, onions, bay leaves, and fresh herbs from the pots. Here's a trick: since I had finding dried or hard parts of herbs in my dishes (like rosemary stems), I put them in tea bags, seal up the tea bag, and toss it in. At the end I fish out the tea bag and yet still get flavored food. Ta-dah!

Finally, [livejournal.com profile] starparty was complaining about some really, really disproportionate male anatomy she saw in a romance she was reading. I, of course, had to respond in the most appropriate way I could.

Plants are planted

tsaiko: Gif of a lemming falling off an edge (gourd!)
Planted all the herbs today. Then I got the Swiss chard seeds in their pot and set up three of my smaller pots to see if I can grow onions/scallions inside. I don't have the best of luck with cold weather crops since I tend to plant them too late in the spring and fall. I'm going to try to grow the onions inside where I can better control the temperature to see if I can succeed at getting them to grow.

Work has me writing more documentation. Which has killed my desire to write when I get home. Sigh. Maybe this weekend?

Plants!

I have plants! For my birthday, my mom took me shopping and I got a new pot for my peace lily, a plant stand (peace lilies are poisonous so I didn't want to put it on the floor, but it was getting too big for the bookcase), a bag of potting soil, and four herbs. The herbs were mint, curly leaf parsley, sage, and thyme. I already have rosemary and savory in one of the pots. They managed to make it through the winter and I'll repot them in a few days. Even though I only potted it a week ago, I'm thinking of repotting the basil in the large herb pots and giving the mint it's own large container. This is a) because mint will take over and b) I go through a lot of mint during the year when I make mint syrup for tea. I also found a recipe for making sorbet from simple syrup that I could use to make mint sorbet. MMMMMMmmmm...

I also need to play my crop of Swiss chard. I may also use one of the indoor pots to do onions because I would like some green onions and if I keep it indoors, I can control the temperature better.

Man, when [livejournal.com profile] miome and I get a house this year, I am going to fill the garden with plants. I'll finally be able to do a vegetable garden, an herb garden, and a flower garden. Lawn? What lawn? We don't need no stinking lawn. That grass is taking up valuable gardening real estate.

I cannot wait.
tsaiko: Gif of a lemming falling off an edge (gourd!)
I am seriously considering ordering seeds for a Cheyenne Bush Pumpkin for next year and growing them in the large pot that I used for the Cherokee Purple tomato. It says it can be grown in a large pot, but I'm not sure I believe it. Still, it could be interesting. I'd love to have fresh pumpkin. I am intrigued.

I also have the perfect icon for this. XD

Today of all days

tsaiko: Gif of a lemming falling off an edge (fireflies)
Last night we had terrible storms go through. Think rain, lightning and nickle sized hail stones. My Cherokee Purple tomato plant didn't make it (though everything else is a little worse for wear, but still going strong). It's not too much of a loss since I haven't really been pleased with the fruit it's been providing. It's been low yield, the tomatoes cracked, and they tend to rot only a few days after being picked. I much prefer my roma. I think next year I'll experiment with a Broad Ripple yellow mostly because it was found in Indiana. XD

I have also managed to wrench my back at some point so I'm in pain. It started with my shoulder muscles and has migrated to my upper/mid back. I've taken pain killers for it but they aren't completely knocking it out. Ugh.

I think I'm going to do some reading this afternoon since that doesn't require me to move much or concentrate that hard. Unlike finishing my stats homework. I'll do that tomorrow when I'm better able to move around campus without pain.
tsaiko: Gif of a lemming falling off an edge (love/peace)
1) Went to an art fair on Saturday. Miome and I wandered for two hours and still did not see all the booths. It was huge and awesome. And sometimes expensive. There was one lady selling simple knitted hats for $65 and people were buying them. The only thing special about them was that they were felted. Well hell, I can churn out one of those suckers using my round loom in an afternoon. If I'd known all I needed to do was felt the damn thing, I could have practically paid for my books this year. What a deal!

2) I bought a ceramic fish. I know this sounds crazy, but my grandfather was an avid fisherman. I can remember summers with him spent fishing. When he moved to GA from NC, he had to leave behind the large bass he had mounted on his wall. My mom said no way. He really wanted a fish to hang on his door, but my mom wanted something non-tacky. While at the art fair, I found one modeled from a real small-mouth bass. I bought it and am going to mount it on a nice board with my grandfather's last name beneath it. It'll be classy and a fish. My mom will not be able to complain.

3) Realized that I somehow lost a week. All the stuff for my internship isn't due until the week after next, meaning I could spend this weekend relaxing and not stressing. Awesome.

4) Turned the entire windowsill full of roma tomatoes from my plant into vegetable broth and pizza sauce. Next time I have got to remember to remove the skins before I boil them. I didn't think it would matted once they were blended up, but it does.

5) Called my sister so we could continue our plans for my mom's 60th birthday party. It's a secret. She doesn't know we're trying to get most of the family to come to a big party for lunch. She just thinks we're going to go out to eat with her. Heh. We are so devious.

Now to go to bed. If I can pull Miome away from the fanfic she's currently reading.

Gardening babble

tsaiko: Gif of a lemming falling off an edge (gourd!)
Today I pruned the Cherokee purple tomato plant so it will hopefully produce more fruit. To be honest, I didn't realize I needed to prune it. I'm so use to growing determinate varieties (like my roma) that I didn't realize that the Cherokee purple was an indetermine variety that would benefit from pruning. Live and learn.

The roma is producing has about a dozen or so tomatoes on it right now. The first batch of four should be ready in another week or so. The others will ripen over the next month. I haven't lost a single fruit to blossom end rot, which is caused by calcium deficiency . Last year, I lost about half my crop to it. I managed this by finally finding tomato specific fertilizer which was actually tomato specific. You'd be amazed at the number of fertilizers promoted as being "for tomatoes" that have excessive amounts of nitrogen and little calcium. Never mind that calcium deficiency is one of the bigger problems with tomato plants.

I've got four tomatoes on the Cherokee purple. It's probably not going to produce as much fruit as the roma, but it'll produce fruit much longer than the roma. Maybe. Summers are shorter here in Indiana than in North Carolina. My roma was producing tomatoes up till the first frost last year. Then again, I also started it late. This year I started it early indoors. We'll see how that works out.

I'm going to record how much each plant produces in the lovely gardening diary [livejournal.com profile] miome gave me. Then I can decide next year whether to grow both kinds again or stick to one.

I'm so looking forward to my first harvest!

Good and bad

tsaiko: Gif of a lemming falling off an edge (fireflies)
Today's good: I got a $1 off my bagel sandwich because I could answer the trivia question at the bagel shop. The question? What state did the first Krispy Kreme open in? Hell I could have told them the city as well off the top of my head. Winston-salem, NC.

Today's bad: Three days before my vacation (yeah, [livejournal.com profile] miome and I are going on vacation!) I start my period. -_-

In other news, one of my tomato plants (the roma) already has tomatos on it. They have just formed but still. Looks like I will have a good crop this year. I can't wait to try the Cherokee Purple tomatos. It's got blossoms and will soon start having fruit. I went ahead and fertilized both with the calcium enriched fertilizer in the hopes of staving off end rot in the fruit. We'll see if I got to them soon enough.
tsaiko: Gif of a lemming falling off an edge (gourd!)
So in case you hadn't heard, Indiana got almost a foot of rain over a 24 hr period on Saturday. This led to a great deal of flooding. Hell, we're suppose to get another 1-3 inches of rain tonight. [livejournal.com profile] miome and I are fine even with the ponds around out apartment complex overflowing because we live on the second floor.

However, there are several roads washed out around town and I passed parking lots filled with mud and water this morning on the way to work. Heck, the place where I have do my internship smelled to high heaven because nearly a foot of water came into part of the building. They're going to rip up the carpet and have already started in on the drywall.

It's also been in the upper 80's, lower 90's temperature wise. That's nothing in NC, but in Indiana the people have a complete freak out when it gets in the 90's. With all the rain we've been having it's been a hot, muggy place around here.

At least my plants are growing like crazy. I have everything but the peppermint out on the balcony. The only reason the peppermint isn't outside is because I have to finish painting the pot it's going in and the last month of weekends its been either a) raining or b) windy. Neither of which will let me use the spray paint I have specifically for plastic.

I am weak

Went last night to one of the local Farmer's Market and they were selling plants. I had already set up my container garden so there really wasn't any room for anything else. But I figured what could it hurt to look?

I now have to go out, get another huge pot, several bags of soil, and another cage because I came back with a Cherokee Purple tomato plant. Sigh. It's supposed to be prolific and the lady assured me it would grow in a pot. We shall see.

Garden Maintenance

Sunday, May 4th, 2008 04:18 pm
tsaiko: Gif of a lemming falling off an edge (gourd!)
Well today has been the first weekend day that 1) it didn't rain, 2) it wasn't windy, 3) it's warm and 4) I wasn't running around like a chicken with my head cut off trying to get an assignment done so I've been doing container maintenance in preparation for planting next weekend. This means I'm getting out all the pots I'll be using this year, evaluating their condition, and painting those that are too sun faded.

I had almost completely used up one can on a long planter so I went to Lowe's to get some more. I also picked up mint seeds, a much larger container for my tomato, and an elusive round tomato cage. I got the last one and as I was carrying it out of the store someone was asking where they were. Too bad. IT'S MINE.

Also, I finally have a eggplant sprout! It's three weeks behind everything else because the first set of seeds I planted failed to germinate. Soaking the seeds overnight finally got them to go. [livejournal.com profile] miome got me a nice book with stained glass flowers on the cover, so I'm using that as a gardening notebook. Hopefully, this will help me keep track of what works and what doesn't.

I was hoping to get some things in pots this week, but it looks like I have to wait until all the pots are painted. Sigh. At least now all my pots will be either green, blue or white and none will be sun faded. And maybe I can at least get the chard and lettuces planted...

PLANTS!

Saturday, April 5th, 2008 04:58 pm
tsaiko: Gif of a lemming falling off an edge (gourd!)
Two weeks ago I started my early plants. These are the cold tolerant, frost resistant plants that will live even if it gets a bit nippy outside. Included in this list are three swiss chard plants, two bibb lettuces, and a mesclun mix. I have seedlings in all my little pots on the windowsill in my room. In about four more weeks I'll transplant all those seedlings to their pots outside on the balcony.

Swiss chard is my favorite of this group. It's heat tolerant so it'll grow all summer long, though I've been told it tastes better in cooler weather. I wouldn't know since "cooler weather" here means "kill everything with snow." Doubly so because I'm growing it in a pot to the roots get hit hard. I started with one plant last year because I'd never had it before (chard is notoriously hard to transport and tastes worse and worse the longer it is cut). I wound up starting two more plants half-way through the summer. This year I'm just going to grow three from the get go.

This weekend I'm going to start my second round of crops. These are the less cold tolerant ones and include a roma tomato, Rosa Bianca eggplant (which is purple and white striped), green onions (so we can finally have green onions when we want them and not when the store feel like providing them) and finally curly leaf kale. Technically I should have started the kale two weeks ago because it's more of a cold weather plant, but we just got the seeds for it today. [livejournal.com profile] miome really wanted some though, so I'm hoping we get some good leaves off of it before it dies off from heat.

I can't wait to get everything up and running this year. Our balcony is perfect for growing plants and I love being able to walk outside and getting fresh produce. If I'm lucky, there won't be a severe drought this year and my tomato will do better and give more fruit. I'm also going to do the water bottle method of watering (i.e. bury a water bottle in the soil when I plant it and fill that up every morning). Hopefully this will keep the plant more evenly watered.

Be prepared for pictures when things start going. I really want to show off the eggplant. From what I understand it'll be gorgeous when it blooms and then again when it starts bearing fruit.

Back!

tsaiko: Gif of a lemming falling off an edge (fruit!)
Dell managed to send the right part, thank goodness. So I am back on the internet. I haven't heard from my SMP partner, which makes me nervous. Oh well. They will get it when I finish it (and I'm not going to work on it tonight because I am just... not in the mood).

The only thing exciting that happened (other than Dell not shipping me the right part) was that I came out to one of my fellow graduate students. She took it well. "I suspected because of the way you always talked about your roommate that's going to move..." Oh yeah, I am subtle. Like brick.

Finally, I have discovered the way to keep all insects away from tomato plants. Tomatoes are notorious for being susceptible to all sorts of insects and diseases. Do you want to know my secret? Plant Swiss Chard. Swiss Chard has a reputation for being easy to care for, disease resistant, and has very few pests. My tomato plant is big, lush, green and will flower in less than a week. It looks picture perfect. My Swiss Chard isn't just holey, it is eaten down to a nub with the exception of about four mangled leaves. And unless deer are some how levitating up to my 2nd story balcony, I can't figure out what the heck is eating it.

Remember the tomatoes. They will make everything better.

Things to do today

Saturday, July 14th, 2007 08:44 am
tsaiko: Gif of a lemming falling off an edge (gourd!)
- Go get tomato cage from Lowe's.
- Get sandpaper to finish making plant stand top
- Get shellac or something similar to make plant stand water proof
- Finish grocery list in attempt not to have to go to store half way through week
- Go grocery shopping (STICK TO THE LIST THIS TIME!!!)
- Pay bill
- Work on [livejournal.com profile] snail_mail_porn story.
- Buff out few dents [livejournal.com profile] miome found in crack story and put it up for others to see

EDIT: Lowe's did not have tomato cages. RAR. I have found a nursery that is located on one of the few roads I know in Indianapolis. I'll try there.

EDIT2: It is obviously too late in the season to get tomato cages. I have stakes. Not what I wanted, but it'll work. I'm tired now, so I'm going work on the story and put the grocery shopping off till tomorrow. Because I can.

Stop breaking!

tsaiko: Gif of a lemming falling off an edge (biwa)
So night before last, my air mattress died. At 2am I woke up to find myself on the hard, hard floor. Of course, being that it was 2am, my brain was not functioning correctly. Instead of doing the normal, rational, and sane thing of "get off the deflated air mattress and get the foam pad I use to exercise on and sleep on that," I decided to spend the entire night on the deflated one.

Not fun.

So last night I made an unplanned Target run where I had the misfortune of being in front of the bitchiest woman in all of Indiana. BUT I have a new, nice, twice the size of the old one air mattress.

This morning, the nose piece to my glasses randomly fell off. I can't find the tiny screw that holds in on either.

This needs to stop. Now.

In happier news, I may have internet at home by this weekend or at the latest, early next week. Which means technically, I could do some work from home (HOORAY!). I also received a CD from [livejournal.com profile] skylark97. Thank you!

I have seedlings. Both the swiss chard and the tomato plants have sprouted, which is pretty good since the package told me 7-10 days. More like 3-4 days. Neither the parsley nor the basil is showing signs of life. If I see nothing this weekend, I'm moving them from the kitchen window to the back porch with its 6+ hours of strong afternoon light. That'll at least get something going.

Last but not least, I am less than a page away from completing the third part of the Witch King story. I've given up on it being just three parts, or even four parts, and am now allowing for at least five parts. No more than six. Do you hear me story? I am dead serious on that limit. As the author, I can and will do horrible things to you if you don't obey. I also may have inadvertently written a plot hole into it, but I think I can fix it. Especially since the plot hole shows up in a drabble and not in the main plot.

Okay, work now.
tsaiko: Gif of a lemming falling off an edge (penis)
Behold the triumph! )

Last but not least, I've been working slowly on stories. Picked up and wrote some on Race the Wind. I've decided to stop fighting the story and just write whatever part I feel like writing instead of trying to make it go in order. It's the only way it's going to work.

Don't know if I'll post it out of order. I may make you people wait. XD

Who am I?
