Okay, between hurricane, death plague, and

miome getting the death plague I have done 0% of my Secret Santa shopping. I am so far behind! But all is not lost. I am determined to catch up this weekend (mostly because I will be traveling next week so won't be able to do it then).

I can do this. *insert determined music here*

I have plants! For my birthday, my mom took me shopping and I got a new pot for my peace lily, a plant stand (peace lilies are poisonous so I didn't want to put it on the floor, but it was getting too big for the bookcase), a bag of potting soil, and four herbs. The herbs were mint, curly leaf parsley, sage, and thyme. I already have rosemary and savory in one of the pots. They managed to make it through the winter and I'll repot them in a few days. Even though I only potted it a week ago, I'm thinking of repotting the basil in the large herb pots and giving the mint it's own large container. This is a) because mint will take over and b) I go through a lot of mint during the year when I make mint syrup for tea. I also found a recipe for making sorbet from simple syrup that I could use to make mint sorbet. MMMMMMmmmm...

I also need to play my crop of Swiss chard. I may also use one of the indoor pots to do onions because I would like some green onions and if I keep it indoors, I can control the temperature better.

Man, when

miome and I get a house this year, I am going to fill the garden with plants. I'll finally be able to do a vegetable garden, an herb garden, and a flower garden. Lawn? What lawn? We don't need no stinking lawn. That grass is taking up valuable gardening real estate.

I cannot wait.

On Saturday, I went to the grocery store by myself since

miome wasn't up to it. I'm not fond of grocery shopping, but I'm also not fond of not having anything to eat. So off I went.

One of the things on the list was zucchini. I was in the produce section looking for it and couldn't locate any. Just as I was about to ask a store employee, I noticed a bin of yellow squash. Since zucchini is a type of squash, I figured it would be near by.

I was right. Sort of.

Beside it was a bin labeled "green squash." It was full of zucchini. Is this just a Virginia thing or what? I've never seen it called "green squash" before, though that's technically correct. I asked Miome when I got home, and she'd never heard it called that either. She also agreed that it was technically correct.

Not that it mattered much. The guy at the register rang it up as a cucumber. Which I guess I can understand, since they are both green, elongated, vaguely phallic fruits posing as vegetables.

Strange fact of the day: zucchini are swollen plant ovaries. The more you know, the more you wish you didn't.

My mother is on the internet.

You guys just don't understand.

My mother is on the internet. I am trying to direct her to safe(r) sites like Facebook with such advice as "Only friend people you know" and "Do not click every link that shows up" as opposed to letting her computer get eaten by something she caught from a wild troll while she is roaming the internet at large. Unfortunately, this means I was showing her stuff using my laptop. She then took this as permission to ask me what I was doing or to look over my shoulder whenever I was on said laptop. So I had to stick to relatively safe sites, which did not include Livejournal. I also could not do stuff like write gay porn. Needless to say, I will not be making my Nov. goal for words.

So I'll just shift that to December and see how much I can get done for that month. Maybe I'll even finish something. Now that my mother has headed home, maybe I'll get something done today. Though more likely, I'll spend most of it on the internet ordering stuff on-line for Christmas.

At least when I get home tomorrow, I'll be able to write.

Today I went shopping with my mom. I a)got exactly what I was looking for and b)was not pressured into buying something I didn't want. I think this might have been a first. I basically got a bright green shirt to replace a shirt I had worn out, a dark blue jacket, and a pair of purple and black heels to go with another dress jacket. I also went and saw Up with my mom and grandfather.

Let's see if this continues or if my mom and I are ready to kill each other by the end of tomorrow.

- Bought some nice clothes (1 necklace, 2 jackets, and a over shirt)
- Took two bags full of old clothes to Goodwill
- Took two bags full of books to the used book store

We've begun the process of getting rid of stuff so we don't have to pack it. This evening I should probably mark up some papers for my thesis proposal. Don't know if I will or not. At least I've managed to accomplish something.

Per tradition, my family is going to go shopping on the biggest shopping day of the year in the US: the day after Thanksgiving.

My mom and grandfather are both in town this weekend, so I'm going to be absent for a great deal of it. My goal: to not let my mom buy me another damn black skirt. I shall tell you on Sunday whether or not I succeed. Since I have mid-terms and projects due next week and I usually get very creative while I'm putting stuff off, I figured I'd try this meme:
