On vacation

Adorable kids I have seen this trip so far:

  • The little boy who upon seeing the koi in the pond yelled “FISH!” and ran up to the edge. The koi, upon seeing the kid, though they were going to get fed and swam quickly up to him. The boy then decided the fish were too scary, ran behind his dad’s legs, and yelled “TOO BIG! BIG FISH!” Dad tried to coax him to the pond. Kid was having none of it. To be fair, some of those koi were longer than my arm so I don’t really blame him.

  • The little Japanese boy on the beach with a pink intertube who convinced his mom to take him into deeper water where the waves were. When he was there he started singing what I assume was a Pokemon theme (it was the only word I recognized) in Japanese. Every time mom tried to go into shallower water he’d stop singing, ask her to go deeper, and then start right back on the Pokemon theme.

  • The little girl who couldn’t have been more than five gently herding the pigeons out of the hotel lobby while her mom held the automatic door open for them. Every time one would go out she’d tell it “Good bird.” Before going to herd the next one out. These birds frequently go in and out when people do, but I don’t think the little girl realized that. She was determined to save them.

I saw this sign not once, but twice in different stores on the way back from Shenandoah National Park.

"Antique Tables
Made daily."

As I told [livejournal.com profile] miome, someone needs to look up the definition of "antique."

Not going as planned

Good news: We are in Raleigh, NC as planned.
Bad news: We had to pull the car over and have it towed on the way to Raleigh, NC, which was not planned.

And of course, this being 4th of July weekend, the dealership service center we had it towed to is closed until Tuesday. Guess it's a good thing I already took Tuesday off. [livejournal.com profile] miome with her magical internet ninja skills found us the one car rental place open on Sunday, so we'll have a rental. My awesome friend picked us up and is getting to the rental place (she and her boyfriend also fed us last night, which makes her doubly awesome). But yeah, plans for this weekend have gone a bit off the tracks.

At least I'll have a new story to tell. :)

On vacation. We will be doing the ghost tour tonight. Should be interesting.

No writing this weekend.

FREEDOM!

I am on vacation from now until Monday. Traveling to see family until then. I may or may not have internet, but I will at least have my computer to type on.

Everyone have a good Thanksgiving.

Wicked was AWESOME

At [livejournal.com profile] gamoid's suggestion, [livejournal.com profile] miome and I went to the Museum of Sex. It was interesting. I liked the exhibit on Condoms and the one on Sex in Animals. After that, we went to eat at Carnegie Deli. Sandwiches as big as my head.

After that it was Wicked. It was awesome. Miome and I have a disagreement going on. Both of us agree that the acting in Wicked was phenomenal (much better than Lion King, were older Simba was kind of a whiny brat). However, I still think the visuals in Lion King were better and Miome liked those in Wicked better. We both agree that Lion King had better musical numbers. Of course, we have already started contemplating threesome.

After the show, we walked down to a Italian restaurant where the food was awesome, but damn if they did not bring out three different desserts before they got it right.

One more day in New York, then we'll be heading back to DC. This has been fun. I can't wait to see what we do tomorrow.

Busy day is busy

Today we went out to The Cloisters because I have wanted for years to see the unicorn tapestries. I was not disappointed. Everything out there was awesome. I loved looking at all the medieval architecture and art. Although let me tell you, there was a couple of little kids that I can only describe as hellions that should not have been there. I am all for kids being exposed to art, but only when they are not running and screaming through the rooms while the parents try to pretend that it's not their hellspawn nearly taking out have the exhibits instead of actually parenting.

After The Cloisters, [livejournal.com profile] miome and I went to The Russian Tea Room and had high tea. That was awesome, though Miome insists that the Russian Tea Room in Chicago is better. I will have to see.

We are probably going to stay in tonight, though I might try and convince Miome to walk down to a Starbucks with me. Tomorrow is Wicked on Broadway and maybe Carnegie Deli. I don't know what we'll be doing on Monday, except hopping the train back home.

Dear digestive tract,

I have not done an unusually large amount of walking. I have not been eating richer food. I have not been under any sort of stress on this trip. So why the hell have I had to run to the bathroom not once, not twice, but three times today? WTF? This is my vacation. Stop ruining!

No love,
Tsaiko

New York, New York!

We are in New York at our hotel. Our room is tiny and I've already made the joke that Spiderman would no trouble knocking on our window given the giant ledge outside. We got in late because our train broke down somewhere in Pennsylvania. But we are here now. I have no idea what we are going to do today: we haven't planned that far ahead. Maybe hunt down the drunk idiots who woke us up at 4am with their loud, giggly conversation in the hallway. We have the camera and so will have pictures. This is going to be awesome.

Happiness!

I have the tickets for Wicked booked.

I have Amtrak tickets booked.

Tomorrow, after I am paid, I will book the hotel room.

I'm taking [livejournal.com profile] miome to New York for her birthday!

I will try not to use too much of this time gathering information to write Young Avengers fic.

In Kentucky!

We are in Kentucky. We have tickets for two of the tours of Mammoth Caves for tomorrow. We actually toured another cave earlier today and also visited Lincoln's birthplace. We might head north again after the tours or we may decide to stay here another night and head back on Monday.

Life is good.

So someone wrote cape slash on the marvel_kink meme, which I read. Last night I dreamt about it. According to my dream, if you leave two capes alone for long enough you wind up with a wet spot composed of a puddle of magic.

I don't even know people.

Also, [livejournal.com profile] miome and I are going to be heading to Mammoth Caves for the Labor Day weekend. We may or may not have internet access and our laptops along. Yeah for geology!

I LIVE!

I am back in Indianapolis! My birthday was awesome (especially the cake). I have a bunch of new clothes. The only bad part of the trip was that the hot water heater at my mom's died. Seriously, what is it with me, visiting, and hot water heaters dying? I took one icy cold shower, then decided to wait till I got home before I took another shower. Ugh. My hair was nasty.

But now I am clean, my cats are crashed out beside me, I have birthday wishes (thank you!) and I have internet access. Life is good.

now to just get through my friend's list...

That's so Vegas

[livejournal.com profile] miome and I walked the strip tonight. We saw the fountains in front of the Bellagio (where we ate) and saw lions at MGM. Otherwise, we basically just wandered through various hotels and explored. It was awesome. Tomorrow we're going to try and get tickets for a show.

While the room we are staying in is nice, there's one problem. It has a connecting door to the room next to us that is absolutely paper thin. The first night we were here, we got to hear our neighbors talk about relationships. The phrase I remember was "Just tell him that you're not that into him." Keep in mind both voices we could hear coming from the room were male. Next night we heard "If he touches you, punch him in the face." Third night they discussed gambling and whether or not to see a show "to take you mind off of him."

I swear, it was like living next to a yaoi soap opera. I told Miome that I fully expected to hear one of the guys say "Man, I can't believe you slept with him." Alas, the two gentlemen seem to have already left since we have not heard either one of them for over a day.

I am slightly disappointed.

I laughed

Tips given to an American ex-pat living in Japan on how to be a tourist in America.

My travel agent has, thoughtfully, seen fit to provide me with a pamphlet of helpful tips to make my overseas travel less of an anxiety-filled social minefield riddled with white people and guns. I got such a kick out of these that I wanted to share.

This really makes me wonder how accurate some of the helpful "tips" I'm getting about traveling to other countries are.

Yeah internet!

My sister has wireless internet set up at her place, but for some reason neither myself nor my brother-in-law can get onto it. My sister can though. I think this is some sort of conspiracy. I have managed to get on using the wired connection. Yeah internet!

No writing done. I did play several games of freecell yesterday though and do some light editing on several stories. I just didn't feel like advancing any of the plots. Might feel different today.

My feet have been licked by my sister's bulldog. o_O

Happy thanksgiving!

Oh hey, the clocks rolled back an hour.

The surprise party went very well. My mom didn't suspect anything. It was great. Food was delicious and everyone liked the decorations I put together after 45 minutes in Target (it was kind of a rush thing).

Today is family reunion. Wish me luck.

Good times

tsaiko: Gif of a lemming falling off an edge (gourd!)
Last night [livejournal.com profile] miome and I went on a cruise on Lake Michigan where we ate good food, listened to okay music, watched the Chicago fireworks over the lake from the cruise, and then watched drunk people attempt to dance on a rocking boat. Good times.

The most exciting part though was when our fairly large cruise boat (this thing had three enclosed decks that seated at least 50-60 people each and a fourth observation deck) was hit by a much smaller boat with two decks that could have held 20 people max. I say hit by since at the time we were pretty much stationary or as stationary as a boat can get on choppy water. This was right after we'd almost gotten rammed by a sailboat that had somehow managed to avoid us. There were dozens on boats out on the water trying to watch the fireworks.

Smaller boat was one of them. The captain of the cruise ship blew the horn several times trying to warn smaller boat. Nope. Hit us. Of course, the captain of the smaller was severely displeased by this and started shouting a bunch of fairly foul names at us. This was heard by most of the passengers because we were all outside waiting for the fireworks to start. Most of us just laughed.

Well, captain of the smaller boat decides to reverse and get his boat off ours. In the process, he almost runs into another larger cruise boat. So what do a bunch of bored, mostly drunk adults do when they see this? Why they start shouting helpful hints!

"Watch out behind you!"
"Don't hit their boat like you hit ours!"
"Little bit more. Little bit more. Stop! You're close enough!"

Not good enough for the captain of the smaller boat. He manages to somehow hit our boat again. Well, the US Coast Guard ship didn't take to kindly to that. It came flying over, chewed the smaller vessel out, and made him take his vessel far away from ours. Then focused a spotlight on the vessel until they did. Then the Coast Guard boarded their vessel, probably to check to see if the captain had been partaking of some celebratory booze. We all laughed then moved to another deck to see the awesome fireworks.

As you can see, an exciting time. XD

Whoever told us that the Museum of Science and Industry was good? Lied. I have never seen a museum so full of corporate sponsorship in my life. I don't mean "Hall of Goodyear" kind of sponsorship. I mean like the model train had John Deere tractors and cars on it, the Farm technology had two large John Deere tractors, and they listed John Deere prominently on other exhibits as a sponsor. They also had whole exhibits that were quite obviously designed just for a company. For example, a whole area about how great manufacturing and robotics with Allen Bradley's name all over it.

I've also never seen a museum more devoted to trying to get money from you. Besides the usual admission, "special exhibit" and Omni theater experience you also have places within the actual exhibits where if you wanted to participate in the exhibits you had to fork over money. It was ridiculous.

I much preferred going to the Robie House, to the Oriental Institute, and the Rockefeller Memorial Chapel.

EDIT: I did forget to mention the one good thing about the museum of Science and Industry. In the farm section, they had a station where you and a partner raced each other to see who could put a milker on a plastic cow's udders quicker. [livejournal.com profile] miome and I stopped to watch people make fools of themselves. It was hilarious to watch a woman in a short black dress and heels squat down to do this. XD

Vacation: Day 1

The free trolleys in Chicago suck great big donkey dick.

My feet hurt.

My stomach needs to stop being a pain (or at least stop causing me pain).

The aquarium and Millennium Park are both awesome.

Also, the first day we were here was the day of the Chicago gay pride parade and we totally didn't know it. Oops?

Time zones suck

I don't know whether to be relieved or disappointed. ^^;

Back from Atlanta. I have the worse headache from flying. I'm seriously considering not going to class this evening. My cats love me and have already forgiven me for abandoning them for days. I wrote nothing but I did read all but the last quarter of the Temeraire books that [livejournal.com profile] maderr lent me as well as half of the one of the sex lives of the Roman Emperors. I have to admit I spent most of the books rooting for Temeraire/Laurence slash. I'm going to eat some lunch, take some pain killers, and then head back out to the airport to pick up [livejournal.com profile] miome at which point I'll decide if I can handle class (which would out me home after 9pm and I'm dead tired at this point).

Also, as a side note, if I complain of being sick in the next few days it is all my sister's fault.

Away, away, away

So starting tomorrow and ending next Monday, I will be without internet as I do the whole family holiday thing. As an added bonus, I have no laptop on which to write while I'm gone. Lovely -_-. Everyone in America have a wonderful Feast of St. Gluttony. Everyone else have a good week/weekend. Post links to any story/porn you post on your LJs in the comments so I don't miss anything.

Love and Peace!
