I have finally planted some of the plants in the raised bed. The plan I was following called for a large contained, so last weekend we got a Jack Daniels whiskey barrel that had been cut in half. This thing was the real deal. How do I know? Because we left it in the back of the car on a hot afternoon. Four hours later, the car smelled like a brewery.
Thank goodness we didn't get pulled by the cops. We would have had an interesting time trying to explain that.
Of course, said whiskey barrel did not have draining holes drilled into it. And of course, our drill bit set has gone missing. One thing about owning a house: you travel to Lowes and Home Depot so much that you begin to think you should just set up house there. With the new bit set I got holes drilled. All I need to do is get EVEN MORE dirt (I have bought 15 bags of the stuff so far this year, and I'm not done yet). Then I'll be able to plant the rest of the plants.
So what have I got in the ground? In the raised bed I have broccoli, cabbage, lemon balm, and onions. I do not know if the onions will make it. They seem kind of pathetic. At least they actually sprouted this time. This is a vast improvement over the last few times I've tried to grow onions from seed.
I also have some plants in the front beds. These come from the local gardening club. I have lobelia of some sort, in blue and been balm of some sort. It'll be interesting to see what color the bee balm blooms.
Things I still have to plant: violas, pole beans, paprika peppers, lettuce, ancho peppers, borage, and nasturtiums. Lots of planting in my future!
