Thanks to the wonderful Kittyknowsthings, on my Hobbit fic An Unexpected Landing. As anyone who has followed me for awhile knows, it is super easy to get me to post more of what I'm writing. This is another of my Hobbit fanfics. It's unfinished. I was going to post it on Tumblr, but then I realize even this first section is almost 5,000 words. The entire thing is almost 11,000 words long, and I'm not done. When did it get so long? It's set in modern times, but all the races and cultures of Middle Earth exist.

Fun fact: Archive of Our Own keeps a record of your entire reading history. I decided that I would go all the way back to the first thing I read in my history (I read things before I made an account so those are lost to time) to kudos fics I didn't kudos, bookmark those fics that I didn't realize at the time would stay with me, and see if any authors I read multiple fics from had written more things I wanted to read.

It's been... interesting. I made my account during my hardcore Teen Wolf phase. Like seriously, the first 10 pages were SOLID Teen Wolf fanfic. Thank goodness a random Avengers fic finally broke that streak. I love me some Teen Wolf but damn past self.

Going through the Teen Wolf authors I read, I noticed two things:

1) A lot of them stopped writing after Teen Wolf. Some of them only wrote Teen Wolf, but a lot of them wrote stuff before that and just... stopped. Was Teen Wolf a fanfic author destroyer or what? I feel sad because some of these people were good authors and I would have loved to read more by them.

2) After Teen Wolf, a large number of authors then started writing Hockey RPF. Like a SCARY number of them. I... don't see the connection there? Like what led people to get interested in Teen Wolf only to jump to Hockey RPF? Whatever it was, it happened to a lot of authors. I did wonder if maybe they wound up in the Check, Please! and then wound up writing Hockey RPF (which is another trajectory I see in fic authors), but I would expect to see MORE Check, Please! fic if that was the case.

It's just... been really interesting to go back through and see what people are doing now. I'm going to continue going through my history. I imagine I'll have some more interesting observations while I do.

Part 1: Where Derek walks in the woods a whole lot

Preview:

The call for a Special Forces alphapack had come in from a small city on the edge of a wilderness preserve sometime just after dawn on a Thursday. Derek hadn’t been at HQ when the call came in. He’d been in bed at his apartment, trying to recover from a previous mission that had gone wrong in a truly spectacular fashion. All he wanted to do was sleep for a week, but when the videoscreen beeped he got up out of bed.

“Hale.” Which was all the greeting Derek ever gave. He only activated sound, leaving the screen blank. The last thing he needed was someone from HQ to see his naked ass as he stumbled around in his dark bedroom, trying to find clothing.

“We have a situation of some sort just south of the western preserve.” Lydia was a red witch, a very powerful red witch, that could make even the toughest alphas jump when she gave the order. Derek was simultaneously impressed and annoyed by her ability even as he pulled on pants and mentally rearranged his planned schedule for his day off. “They’re calling for an alphapack.”

“I’m on leave,” Derek reminded her. If they were calling in alphas on leave, it had to be bad. He found a shirt, sniffed it, and decided that it wasn’t too bad. Laundry hadn’t been high on his list of things to do for the last week.

“I know.” Derek snorted at the lack of apologies from Lydia. Typical when she was determined to get her way. “We’ve already got one alphapack deployed dealing with a few rogue omegas, three on guard rotation at the detention centers since there was a full moon last night, and two others in districts too far to get here in a reasonable amount of time. We’re pulling in the second string now.”

A lack of apologies and insults? Must be big. “What’s going on?” Derek pulled on a pair of socks. His wallet and keys went into his pocket.

“There’s a missing established pack. Nine werewolves. The local law enforcement found the alpha in pieces in the woods. They’re refusing to go back out to look for the rest of the pack and we need to find out what happened.”

“Wait. They found the alpha in pieces and eight missing betas?” Omegas were often found torn to pieces if they turned vicious and strayed into an established family pack’s territory. Occasionally, it happened to betas if for some reason their alpha went crazy on them. Usually by the time the alpha went after the second beta, the others in the pack banded together to take the alpha out. Sometimes they even succeeded.

But an entire pack? Even the alphapack would have problems taking down a pack even with weapons and back-up. It just didn’t happen.

“There’s already rumors spreading about this. Law enforcement wants to keep in low key, but...” Lydia signed over the line. She sounded tired and Derek wondered if they’d pulled her in before her shift to coordinate this. “An alpha is dead and its presumed the rest of the pack is too. We need you out there yesterday to figure out what is going on.”

His day off could wait. Derek pushed his feet into shoes and began to do up the laces. “I’ll be there in less than an hour.”

Sorry for the radio silence. I seem to have migrated fully over to tumblr. Where I am tsaiko. I know this is a total shock. I've started to post fic there. It's not my favorite posting/reading format, but LJ just isn't doing it for me any more. I'll still occasionally post here and will continue reading, but just not as often.

Also, I really want to make this the summary of my next TW story.

"Derek Hale gets called in on his day off, wanders around the forest, and tackles a naked Stiles. It's a Thursday."

The problem is that while it's the truth, it so does not fit what happens in the story. I'm afraid I'm going to get complaints about how inappropriate it is. On the other hand, I think using that as a summary would be hilarious. If I can't think of a better summary, I'm totally using that one.

Wolf Bone

Someone else knows that wolves have a penis bone. Not only that, someone else wrote a fic featuring it.

I WILL NOT BE THE WEIRDEST ONE IN THIS FANDOM. SOMEONE HAS ALREADY WRITTEN ABOUT WOLF PENIS BONES IN A FIC. THEY HAVE SET A PRECEDENT AND I WILL JUST BE FOLLOWING IN THEIR FOOTSTEPS. THIS MAKES ME FEEL SO MUCH BETTER ABOUT INCLUDING BACULUMS IN MY FANFIC.

One of my guilt pleasures is Ghost Hunters. I know some of it is wishful thinking on the ghost hunters part (seriously, a bunch of their "voices" sounds like creaks from an old house or something like a squirrels in the attic), but I wouldn't go so far as saying it was faked. It could be, but that's not why I watch. I watch it to see a bunch of people who are totally cool and calm dealing with creepy, paranormal stuff lose their shit when a bug lands on them. Or watch them play pranks on each other. Or start talking about the most hilariously random crap while wandering around. Or watch them prove that some of the paranormal stuff is actually pipes, wind blowing a door, lights from outside, etc.

I am currently glutting on Teen Wolf fanfiction. Which is a dangerous thing, be

I am so tempted to write werewolf ghost detectives with the Teen Wolf cast. Lydia is the skeptic always proving stuff isn't ghosts except when she can't. Then she gets pissed. Derek is the leader with a tragic past, and the reason people tune into the show because he is hot in leather jacket and tight jeans that he wears to investigate. Allison totally believes because she's seen them and drags Scott, who is spastic comic relief, along with her. Issac, Erica, and Boyd are all investigators who regularly go on various investigations depending on what is needed. Jackson is one of the tech guys who Lydia orders convinces on investigating once in a while. Stiles is one of the other tech guys who use to sit in the van all the time watching the camera feeds until the fans started demanding that he be more active in investigations (because they loved is random wacky comments and the UST between him an Derek).

Everyone knows about werewolves. In fact, half the audience turns in just to see if any of the investigators will get scared enough to wolf out. Scott does this on a scarily frequent basis as does Issac and occasionally Boyd and Erica. There is much debate on what, if anything, would make Derek wolf out (and some debate about if he did one time). Werewolves are normal but ghosts are a different thing entirely. LOL.

On one hand, I kind of want to write this. On the other hand, I'm not sure anyone would read something quite this self-indulgent. It would be hilarious

Also, my paid account expired and now I need to decide if I want to stay with LJ or move over to Dreamwidth. I'm thinking of paying on a month to month basis until LJ either implements their terrible continuous friend's page idea (the one thing I absolutely loathe about Tumblr) or drops it entirely. Sigh.

I am reading The Sentinel fanfiction, which I don't think I can recommend as a whole since most authors seem to think that if the main characters have sex, puppies and rainbows follow them ever afterwards and all of life's problems are fixed. I feel like most stories are almost the exact opposite of the romance novel trope where if the two characters would have a five minute conversation then the entire reason for the book would be solved. In The Sentinel fic, since the two characters know each other's every feeling, all their problems are solved. Sorry, life doesn't work that way.

I was telling [livejournal.com profile] miome that despite this, and the fact that I've only ever seen half an episode of the series, I keep reading. Mostly because I keep wondering how much of what I'm seeing repeatedly in fanfics was actually based on the show and how much is fanon. Of course, Miome asked me what I remembered about the half episode I'd seen. Below is my summary.

"There was a curly haired guy and a macho man. They were in South America. I think curly haired guy had been kidnapped? Anyway I remember a village and that macho man kicked ass. Then there was a black panther. I didn't get that part."

Miome tells me I pretty much summed up the series there. :D

Also, the AC for our apartment is still not fixed. This is getting ridiculous. We've called the apartment complex several times and nothing. Not pleased.

It's not often that my search of the internet brings me goodies, but when it does, they are always the best goodies. I found a link to what was being touted as "original vampire slash" on delicious.com. Given that I am a masochist sometimes, I clicked on the link and started reading.

About two pages in I see the word "Carpathian." Wait. I know that word. It's from a series of truly terrible romance novels by Christine Feehan. I am dying laughing now because when I say these books are terrible, I mean they are bad.Bad, bad, bad. )

TL:DR version = DARK DEVIANCE IS WHAT I WISH ALL THE GAY ROMANCE eBOOKS I BUY/READ ON THE INTERNET WERE LIKE. CHEAP, TRASHY ROMANCE NOVELS WITH A SIDE OF HOT MAN SEX.

All I have seen is a minute long trailer, and I already wish there was fanfiction for the Avengers movie. Hell, I'd be tempted to write it myself if I didn't know that it was going to get jossed all to hell come May 2012.

Although [livejournal.com profile] miome and I came up with a hilarious snippet that ended with Tony Stark feeling the need to write a letter of apology to some dwarven engineer for telling Thor about cockrings. ^_^

In other news, I made salmon with tomatillo sauce that was absolutely fantastic. Sauce was a bit more work than I thought it would be, but you can make it ahead of time and just warm it up. Will have to remember that.

And at the end of this post, spell checker does not like the words tomatillo, jossed, cockring, dwarven, or fanfiction. Fanfiction and jossed I can understand, but the other three are just mind boggling. Clearly the Firefox spell checker needs to get out more.

So I was reading a fanfic the other day, and while it had interesting parts, there was one aspect that wound up annoying the ever loving crap out of me. I'm not going to say for what fandom because really, the characters were so OOC that they might as well have been original. However, they were interesting characters in their own right, which was why I kept reading. And also why I kept being annoyed.

Sometimes, you start reading a fanfic/story, and you immediately know it's going to be crap. Either the writing is terrible (or just not to your taste), the characters are annoying, the plot has all the depth of a parking lot puddle, or there's just a general smell of shit floating around that you can't quite put your finger on. So you stop reading. Other times you only realize 13 chapters in that there is a huge, glaring, ginormous issue and it is slowly driving you insane because it's dragging everything else into turd land.

This fic was the latter. The problem? The main characters were in a fairly adventurous, kinky, polyamorous relationship which several other people found out about (sometimes by walking in on them) and everyone was not only fine with this, they were generously supportive of their choices. So supportive that in my head every time someone mentioned how supportive they were I pictured them looking like Buddy Jesus.

Keep in mind, when I say everyone, I mean everyone. Sixty year old grandma who is the neighbor? Yep. Middle aged conservative police officer? Yep. People who generally hate the main characters in the series? Yep. Random people off the street? Hell, they're dispensing advice! The author even mentioned people that might have a problem with what was going on, but they were always shadowy, "those other people" kind of characters that were only mentioned in passing. If they existed somewhere in the large city where the story took place, our protagonists certainly never ran into them.

I think I could have swallowed this if it was supposed to be set in a futuristic, sci-fi, fantasy, or alternate world kind of setting. But no. This was supposed to be set right now. And while I hope in the future we are all a little more open minded and accepting, we sure as hell ain't there yet. Even if we do get there, I can't imagine random strangers giving advice about the best bondage gear sources in the middle of the street to people they've just met 100% of the time.

I'm not a big angst fan or anything, but I felt like the author missed an opportunity to ass ADD some dramatic tension to the story by always making everyone okay. That was my other biggest issue. A lack of tension in the story. There was some, but it was usually resolved fairly quickly until the next bit came up. Even the over-reaching tension/plot of the story wasn't that tense. It was disappointing.

Ah well. There was kinky bondage threesome, which there is a distinct lack of in fandom. At least the author managed to handle that semi-decently.
tsaiko: Gif of a lemming falling off an edge (question)
I have a bad feeling that fanfic is once again going to get me sucked into another series.

In this case, it'll be USA White Collar. Time to add it to my Netflix list and see what it's like. Sigh.

Obviously not as good as [livejournal.com profile] maderr's stuff, but this was just too adorable not to share.

- It's sad when the one fic I can really recommend out of all the ones I've read only tangentially has anything to do with werewolves. Even better when the plot is "Sam and Dean get their memories stolen by Elves." No, I'm not even kidding. At least the characterization is excellent even if the ending was not. Underhill by astolat.

- The best of the werewolf stories was a Sherlock one. It's the Lupercalia by Mad Maudlin series. I wouldn't call it great writing, but it's solid and the ideas are interesting. Also sex. Can't fault it for lack of sex.

- There were a couple of others (also Sherlock, strangely enough) that were decent, but which I can't find right now. They were pretty forgettable because I don't even know what to search on to get them back. Ah well. At least these will keep people somewhat entertained.

I think this might have been an earlier attempt at Knowledge is Power, but I'm not 100%. I don't remember where I was going with it. Oh well. It's something short to post.

The next thing in this notebook is titled "PWP, Digimon" and is about 2 pages long. That ought to be interesting.

EDIT: I just started reading the PWP. I wrote Ken/Digimon Emperor PWP. Why do I not remember this? And why did I stop? ;_;

Happy blowing shit up day! I know this is rushed, but I've had the scene in my head for months (since [livejournal.com profile] miome gave it to me), and I just needed an excuse to write it. Totally AU, because everyone is about 9-10 in this and they already know each other.

Even though I promised this part almost a month ago, I only just now had time to type it up. I still haven't finished part 2b, but that hasn't stopped me from starting part 3. Ah well. I already knew this was going to be one of those stories that I was going to write just the scenes that I wanted to rather than all that I have plotted out.

Why does my mind keep giving me these cracktastic AUs?

Also, I have the worse time with quotation marks when typing this up. I have no idea. If you see quotation marks missing or appearing where they shouldn't, let me know so I can fix it.

Young Avengers, Therapy Vampire, AU, PG-13 )

Note to self: at some point you'll need to work into the story why it's so important for Billy get over his fear of being bitten. If you can't work it into the next part, then definitely the part after that. Maybe in a short scene with Tommy?
tsaiko: Gif of a lemming falling off an edge (ninja)
Some people expressed some interest in the story behind the second drabble in this post. And since I can be suckered into writing just about anything, I thought I do a bit more in that universe.

I had completely forgotten I'd written so much of this idea until I was flipping through a notebook looking for an empty page. Of all the Young Avengers, I always feel like I have the hardest time getting Teddy's character right. I feel like I have a good grasp of everyone else, but just can't seem to get Teddy quite right. This is the only thing I've written where I didn't get that feeling so I'm really proud of it.

Now I just have to convince myself that I won't screw his characterization up if I write more of it. -_-
