Lest you think I didn't use the hours I spent at the courthouse waiting to be dismissed from jury duty productively.
The whole thing had started with an idea for a paranormal special on the Surreal channel. By the time producers had gotten in touch with her, Lydia Martin was already known among paranormal investigators as a skeptic. She had targeted three of the most well-known paranormal groups, and had succeeded in completely ripping apart their methods. For one of them, she had even uncovered evidence of one of them faking voices. It earned her something of a reputation. Add to the fact she was smart, good looking, confident, and the camera loved her... well it was a match made in heaven.
Five years ago, Lydia had agreed to do the special pairing her with a believer in paranormal on an investigation into a haunted landmark. The special would be two hours long. It was a great way for her to be on TV and to show that ghosts were not real. The producers started on a hunt to find a believer to co-host with her.
Derek Hale had been a small time paranormal investigator who just happened to be a werewolf with rock hard abs, and a penchant for wearing tight shirts. As far as Stiles knew, he’d been practically living out of the Camaro when he got the call. How he could afford a Camaro when Derek couldn’t even make rent at the time was one of life’s little mysteries. His answer was “I don’t want to talk about it” no matter how many times Stiles asked.
At first, Derek had said no. Three weeks later he’d called the producers back and said yes. No one knew what had caused the change of heart, and Derek didn’t talk about that either. Lydia and Derek were a go.
The special had gotten the green light from the network executives as long as additional people were part of the team. So Lydia had suggested Jackson, whom she knew from college. Someone on the crew had mentioned Allison, who was a believer and also happened to be part of a Hunter family that hunted rogue supernatural beings. She’d recommended Scott, who was also a werewolf, and the initial group was complete.
Stiles had been brought on as part of the production crew, since he knew Scott from their time in Beacon Hills. It seemed that the adage about it not being what you know, but who you know was alive and well in Hollywood. He really didn’t care. Anything to get him out filming cheap pornos in Los Angeles, and into something he could actually tell his Dad about over the phone.
There was a rumor among paranormal investigators that having someone supernatural – whether they were a werewolf, vampire, witch, or something else – on your team increased paranormal activity. It was during the first special that everyone realized that having two werewolves on a team meant that ghost could actually manifest themselves with ease.
The rest was history.
