They'd gotten caught in a sudden summer rainstorm. One moment the sun had been shining. The next it was pouring down rain, sending fellow New Yorkers scurrying for umbrellas or doorways or awnings. Billy and Teddy had opted for the latter and stood dripping in front of the plate glass window of a café under a green and white striped awning.

"I thought it was supposed to rain tomorrow," Billy complained. His hair was plastered to his head and Teddy noticed that the T-shirt he wore was clinging like a second skin. Which was something he really shouldn't be noticing.

"At least the games are still dry," Teddy replied. It gave him a reason to look away before he did something stupid. The store had put them in a plastic bag, and Teddy has stuffed it into his jacket at the first drop.

"I see your priorities are in order." Billy's voice was dry and Teddy found himself looking back up. His eyelashes were stuck together from the rain water and there was a single drop running down his cheek. "What?"

Before Teddy could even think about it, he leaned forward. Billy's lips were cool and tasted vaguely metallic from the rain. Teddy's eyes drifted closed and he felt Billy breathe in sharply through his nose.

They heard clapping and broke apart. Behind them, several patrons of the café were looking, some still clapping. Billy turned an interesting red. Teddy could feel his own cheeks burn.

"Rain's stopped. Let's go." Billy stepped out from the awning into the sunlight. "We're still heading to your place, right?"

"Right." Teddy felt relief bloom in his chest, closely followed by disappointment. He hadn't messed their friendship, but he hadn't moved things forward either. "You know I'm going to beat you, right?"

"You can try."

When Billy reached back and curled his fingers around Teddy's, no matter what the outcome of the video game, he felt like he'd already won.
