Foiled again!

I was going to show a picture I took of the awesome filet crochet bunny I did, but I can't find the cable for my camera. Foiled! FOILED I SAY!
I was then going to write on something, but can't decide what. FOILED AGAIN. Until I realize that I have my friend's list to decide for me.
Pick a number between 1 and... 147? Good lord, I have a lot of WIPs in this one folder.

Sard knew there was going to be trouble the moment he saw the stranger across the crowded ballroom. He had a knack for smelling trouble a mile away. Pyrope said it was one of the many reasons she continued to hire him.
Pyrope was hosting what she termed "a small, intimate gathering." What that meant in reality was there were some three hundred of the most influential people in the Silicate. Most of the larger families were represented: the Olivenes, the Zircons, the Epidotes, the Pyroxens, the Micas, and the Feldspars. And of course the Garnets, which included Miss Pyrope and her illegitimate daughter, Rhode.
He'd worked enough of these shindigs that Sard knew most of the major players. The minor ones still eluded him though. Which was why instead of walking directly up to the stranger, he caught a hold of Kyan to find out who it was first.
"Kyan," Sard said as the head of the servants walked by. Blue grey eyes flicked away, obviously wanting to get back to work, but Kyan paused. "Who is the gentleman that just walked in?"
The head of the servants obediently turned his head towards where Sard had indicated. "Tsavorith." Kyan spat the name like it was something foul. "One of Miss Pyrope's cousins. He is the son of Grossular and a foul spot on the Garnet name. He is not welcome in this house. I have no idea what he is doing here."
"So he is trouble?" Sard said. His instincts had said as much and they had never failed him before. "Do you think he's after the jewels? Should I make sure he leaves?"
"He's trouble, but not a thief." Kyan hesitated, obviously warring with himself. "Do nothing. I will ask the Miss what she wants done." The head servant faded back among the crowd.
Wait. Yeah, he hadn't been hired to wait for trouble to start but to make sure it didn't happen in the first place. Sard sighed, drunk the rest of his glass of expensive wine, set the glass on aservant's passing tray, and approached Pyrope's cousin. Best way to deal with a problem was to face it head on.
"Tsavorith Garnet," Sard said as an introduction. The man turned at his name, his whole posture radiating surprise. Unlike the rest of the men here, Tsavorith wasn't in a tuxedo. Instead he'd opted for a semi formal suit and dark tie, though every inch of expensive fabric screamed money. "I'm surprised to see you here."
Green eyes looked him over from head to toe. There was obvious disdain as Tsavorith took in his rented tux, white socks, and slightly scuffed dress shoes. "Do I know you?"
"Not really. I'm one of the goons Pyrope hired to make sure everything goes smoothly at her little shindigs. Rumor has it that you and her aren't on the best of terms. I'm just checking up with you to see if there's a reason you're here." Sard crossed his arms and waited for Tsavorith's answer. He didn't have to wait long.
"I'm sorry, I'm afraid I don't explain myself to the hired help," Tsavorith replied. His voice held the faintest trace of an accent that Sard couldn't quite place. "If you'll excuse me, I have other people to speak with."
He quickly moved to block Tsavorith's path. Sard had both muscle and height on the other man, but Tsavorith didn't seem the least bit intimidated by either. "I'm sorry, Mr. Garnet, but I can't let that happen. I'm sure you understand."
"No, I don't understand and I get the impression you don't either." Tsavorith's voice was icy cold. Sard absently noted that the angrier Tsavorith became, the more precise his words. The accent all but vanished. "Move."
"Not going to happen," Sard replied. Tsavorith leaned forward, suddenly all in Sard's space. Sard tensed, but didn't back down. "I don't want a fight, but if there is one, you won't be the winner. Think about that before you act."
And the rest
Date: 4/13/09 12:50 am (UTC)Tsavorith opened his mouth to respond, but never got the chance. Pyrope appeared at Sard's elbow as if summoned by magic. At the sight of her, Tsavorith leaned back slightly, no longer crowding Sard.
"Cousin. I was not expecting you." Her voice was cooly polite. "Mr. Onyx, I would like to introduce my cousin Tsavorith Garnet. Tsavorith, let me introduce Mr. Onyx. He runs his own security company and is in charge of security for my events."
The polite thing to do would be to shake hands. Neither Sard nor Tsavorith offered their palm. Instead they stared at each other, still sizing each other up.
"I'm sure he's a very capable security guard. He certainly is threatening enough," Tsavorith replied. "I get the feeling he doesn't appreciate me showing up."
"I am surprised myself. You usually don't show up at these events." Mostly because he wasn't invited, Sard thought. Pyrope rested a hand on Tsavorith's arm. Sard kept very still, watching to see if the other man would make any threatening moves towards his employer. Instead all the fight seemed to drain out of Tsavorith.
"Family shouldn't need an invitation to see one another. And I assure you I am here on family business," Tsavorith replied. His green eyes flickered briefly to Sard. "Is there some where we could discuss this in private? I'd hate to ruin your party."
Say no, Pyrope. Sard thought the words hard at his employer. He did not want to let this man out of his sight. Obviously, his psychic powers weren't working because Pyrope nodded once. "The library. Sard, please make sure nothing happens while I am gone."
"Yes, Miss Pyrope," Sard said. His voice was bland but inside he was seething. So many things could go wrong and he wouldn't even be aware of them until it was too late.
This could only turn out badly.
