tsaiko: Gif of a lemming falling off an edge (question)

[livejournal.com profile] miome actually came up with this, and I want to put it up here just so I can remember it. Ah the snark.

C1: I brought all this kink and fun into you and your boyfriend's relationship. And what do I get out of it?
C2: A hand that isn't your own?

Also, while going through my story folder during class, I stumbled across something I'd written that was supposed to be a fanfic for another writer's world. Only by the time I finished the story, the writer had taken her world in a totally different direction and revealed several pieces of information about her world that completely invalidated the story. There was no way to fix this.

I just kind of dropped the whole idea of continuing the story. It's still a really good story though and doesn't really name any of the author's characters. I was just playing around in her world. So here's the question: do I post this story on my LJ? If I do post, do I acknowledge what it was a fanfic of? Do you think the original author (who is still active on the net and on LJ) would mind if I didn't mention it? Do you think she'd mind if I did mention it (assuming she even remembers or even read the story I wrote)?

I'm curious to hear people's opinions.

Do it! *bounces*

*cough* I mean, let's think about this, shall we.

Tsaiko wrote a story. Minor complications, yadda, yadda, yadda. Tsaiko wrote a story and she's holding out on us.

;____; *puppy eyes*

ETA: maybe if you put it under a friend's lock? Or, you know, you could just throw it out there. If it's familiar enough for her to recognize the world and she cares enough to read and wants some recognition, that's why there are the handy little edit buttons, right?

Love the snark. It's beautiful and short and snappy.

You could call the story an AU and leave it at that. A bit of a cop out but if what you wrote doesn't quite fit. And I really doubt the author would mind. Not many people do.

Hm, you could make a change here or there, and call it original? Possibly with an 'inspired by' note. Or you could leave it as is, and include an 'inspired by' note.

But, yes, you should definitely post. *nods*

I'm with the rewrite (if necessary) and "inspired by". I know I have written a few stories that were Inspired By Acid Reflux, but would not qualify as fanfic as none of the original characters or places were named.

It might be a good idea to ask the original author, if you're not sure. Personally, I wouldn't care if someone wrote fanfic based on a world I created as long as I was credited somehow (ie, the whole 'inspired by' thing). But everyone is different, right?

It probably wouldn't hurt to ask.

Thinking on this from the perspective of the author, I would say drop her a note to let her know that you have this story and would she mind if you posted it on your LJ?

She knows that I've written the story. I actually had it up on my old website and sent her the link when I finished the first part. She's read it as well as far as I know. It's been about five years though (I've got this dated as 2002).

I guess I should mention that it's based on Twig's Knights and Pawns (http://www.eukaryotic.dreamhost.com/NewFiles/knights.html) universe since you'd know what I was talking about.

Oh right! Well given context, Twig is always really stoked when someone write something in her universe. So I would definitely let her know :P

I can vouch for roommate opinion... if she didn't care about the Digimon rip off of her Ff7-epic fic, this won't phase her in the least. Just say 'inspired by' and cc her on your post, and you'll be fine. If you're worried, she's succeptable to bribery. :-D
