Young Avengers, House of M AU, fragment, PG-13
Sunday, February 7th, 2010 04:55 pmA continuation of the events described here. Because there was a reason Billy was unscrewing a bed leg in the last bit.
Billy was pressed against the wall beside the door, listening as someone rattled a key in the lock. His hands were clammy with sweat, but Billy didn't dare wipe his hands. Doing so would mean he'd have to let go of the metal bed leg. He was only going to get one shot at this.
The lock stopped rattling. The door began to open and Billy held his breath. He'd pushed the bed as tightly in the corner as he could, and arranged the pillows so it looked like he was sleeping under the blanket. That seemed to keep the bed from tipping due to lack of leg. Hopefully, it would fool whoever was coming through the door. After a pause, the person stepped forward.
One of the first things Billy had been taught in self-defense class was to not to hesitate. If you were going to use force, use it. Be decisive. Don't hesitate. Put all you had behind it and follow through. You might not get another chance.
But in the split second before he swung down, Billy recognized who was coming through the door. Teddy. He hesitated.
Maybe Billy made a sound. Maybe Teddy saw something out of the corner of his eye. Maybe he just sensed that Billy was there. Whatever the reason, Teddy turned at the last second. Instead of connecting with the back of Teddy's head, the metal bed leg hit the side of it.
Teddy went down. Billy took a step forward and hesitated. He shouldn't feel concerned about Teddy. He did, but he shouldn't, because Teddy – if that was his real name – was a kidnapper.
He deliberately turned towards the door. The pool of blood beginning to spread around Teddy's head made him a little nauseated. Adrenaline made him shaky. His breathing was hard as Billy stepped through the door.
And ran smack into someone else that was coming through the door. It was another guy who looked like he'd made his costume out of recycled American flags. Billy tried to hit him with the bed leg, but he caught it one handed and didn't flinch. So Billy did the next best thing. He tried to knee the guy in the crotch.
That didn't work.
Next thing Billy knew his arm was jacked up high behind his back until his shoulder screamed in pain. He was frog marched back into the room. Something inside of him eased when he noticed that Teddy was sitting up. Even if meant he now had two people to deal with instead of one. There went his shot at getting away.
"Hulkling, are you okay?" American flag guy asked Teddy. There was blood in his hair and he looked dazed, but he was sitting up.
"Oh god, you have code names," Billy blurted out before he could stop himself.
"I'm fine, Patriot," Teddy replied. He got unsteadily to his feet.
"Lame code names." Patriot obviously didn't like that because he moved Billy's arm higher. "Ow. Ow. Ow. That hurts."
"It's supposed to, Prince William." Billy winced. They knew who he really was. Not that Billy really thought that he'd been randomly kidnapped by people who had no clue. Especially not when he was wearing power dampeners. "Any idea where he go this?" Patriot tossed the bed leg so it landed at Teddy's feet.
"The bed?" Teddy suggested. They both looked at the bed that was still standing. With one hand, Teddy pushed the footboard. The bed wobbled dangerous, before tipping down in one corner.
"I can't believe you hit me with a bed leg." There was a note of accusation in Teddy's voice.
"I can't believe you kidnapped me."
"I can't believe you two are fighting over this." Patriot gave Billy a shove. Billy stumbled forward and Teddy headed towards the door. "Come on, Hulkling. Let's get you cleaned up."
"My family won't pay a ransom." It was one of grandfather's rules and everyone knew it. And the last group that had gotten upset about that rule and had taken it out on Billy and Tommy had wound up spread across several city blocks. Mysteriously.
"Who says we want a ransom?" Patriot replied.
"Then why kidnap me? You'll only get yourselves in trouble. My grandfather won't give into your demands either," Billy said. Neither Teddy nor Patriot replied. Instead they both left the room, locking the door behind them.
Awesome.
