All fandoms are created crazy.
I have been involved in many fandoms, seen many fandoms, and run screaming from many fandoms. The one thing that holds true for all of them is that all fandoms are crazy. This is without fail. The only thing to do is find fandoms that have a type of crazy that you can tolerate or, in some cases, crazy you really, really enjoy.
It is with this understanding that start going through fanfiction in a established fandom that I've not been in before. New fandoms are different: they are growing things that haven't quite become so set in their crazy ways. Established fandoms, on the other hand, have set crazy ways. They have established their own fanon, have their own trends and quirks already built in. And if your not careful, these things cannot be unseen.
I have found one today that floored me in a way I haven't felt since the time I found pre-movie Transformers yaoi. With the robots. Naked. And getting it on. Nevermind that they are robots and how the hell do robots get naked, these fics did it. Why I don't know. Just like I don't know why the authors I read today did what they did.
They turned Steve Rogers into a happy homemaker.
Oh. My. God.
Steve Rogers? Steve Rogers? This is the guy who punched Hitler. His alter ego is Captain America not June Cleaver! He saves the world and stands for American values. He does not wander around in high heels, pearls and an apron waiting hand and foot on Tony Stark. NO!
Okay, maybe in someone's sick twisted imagination he wanders around in high heels, pearls and an apron and nothing else. And when I read it (because I know with a deep, burning feeling of dread it has been written) I will point and laugh in an effort to keep from crying. Do you know why? Because I will picture it with this version of Cap in mind. Now you can too.
There are just no words for how OOC this characterization is for Captain America. No words. Hell, I would almost want him to be a stereotypical weepy uke over this. It's just so... out there. And there's more than one store that does it! Was there a contest? A challenge? Did someone write a fic and everyone else just jump on the bandwagon? I am baffled.
Seriously though, there's already a character that cooks, cleans, does the housework, and provides a nice contrast to all the other superheros that make up the Avengers. His names is Jarvis. He is the butler. There is no logical reason for Steve Rogers to take over his job.
I swear, some days it just doesn't pay to read fanfic.

...Maybe they thought it was funny to make up a version of Cap that had his secret identity/life ridiculously opposite his superhero persona? Or, well, maybe they just didn't think at all, that seems to happen an awful lot with fanfiction.

That's almost as bad as the one where Superman has tentacles for genitalia.
