Junior year, first semester

Not for the first time since taking the post three years ago, Justin wondered why exactly he had to be Queen. Right now being Queen meant climbing the ugliest building on campus – a squat, poured concrete block that was not so affectionately called the Penitentiary – to try and convince the dragon on top of it that they didn't kidnap maidens any more. It just wasn't done. No matter how stressed out you were.

"I'm betting its Nicholas," Justin muttered under his breath. The description certainly fit. There were only three other black dragons on campus, two of which were females and therefore lacking horns. The person sent to get him and been adamant about the horns. The only other male, a quiet senior named Jonathon, had more control than this. That left Nicholas. "Pain in my side since I first met him."

First the dragon had come out of the closet to him. Then he'd gone back into the closet. Then he'd insisted the closet had completely disappeared even though it was obvious to anyone with eyes that it had not.

"That guy is so far in the closet he's probably met Aslan," Sully had said after meeting Nicholas for the first time. Considering the only person Sully was really out to was Justin himself, that was saying something.

Once Justin got to the top of the metal ladder, he braced himself on the concrete roof and pulled himself up. From across the roof, the dragon growled. Justin rolled his eyes. He'd been right. It was Nicholas.

Hopefully, whatever poor girl Nicholas managed to grab wouldn't be too hysterical. He always hated the ones that were. Justin brushed off his jeans, stood, looked for whoever Nicholas had snatched, and got ready with his prepared speech.

Only to freeze, the words dying in his throat.

"Hey, Justin. I figured you'd show up eventually," Sully said. He gave kind of a sheepish smile, his hair half falling into his eyes.

"Sully? What... Nicholas grabbed you?" Justin said. He took two steps forward, before catching himself. Nicholas growled low and fierce, his head weaving. The dragon wasn't in his right mind. Justin could not just wander up to him like they were old friends.

"Nicholas? Is that who this is?" Sully looked surprised. "Yeah. He picked me up right from the Quad and flew up here." Sully reached out and laid a hand on the dragon's head. Nicholas's growl changed, turning almost into a purr.

Uh-huh. Totally not gay. Sure.

"He didn't hurt you or anything, right?" Justin asked. Most dragons when they were snatching people didn't mean to hurt them on purpose, but sometimes they forgot their own strength. Especially when they were going purely on instinct like Nicholas was.

"No. Shook me up a bit and then nosed me around when we got up here." Sully laughed. "He's more like a big puppy than a dragon."

"That's good. I'm going to convince him to let you leave. Then I'm going to have a nice, long talk with him and find out why he's doing this." And Justin was going make sure he brought up the fact that Nicholas's instincts were to grab men and not maidens, because this whole denial thing was getting ridiculous.

"He'll listen to you?" Sully said.

"Of course he will. I'll have this whole thing sorted out in about five minutes."

Just as he'd finished saying it, something whizzed by with a distinctive thwoosh sound that Justin had hoped he'd never, ever hear again in his life. Nicholas lunged, snatching the arrow out of the air with his jaws and crushing it with his teeth. Then he roared his displeasure at being attacked.

"Was that an arrow?" Justin asked. His voice was about two octaves higher than normal.

"Someone's shooting at us," Sully said. He jumped upwards, grabbed onto Nicholas's horns, and pulled the dragon down. Justin, against all logic and reason, ran to the edge of the building.

"WHAT ARE YOU MOTHER FUCKING IDIOTS DOING?" Justin practically screamed. Two paladins, still in their white uniforms from the job fair, looked up at him in shock. He was guessing they didn't realize he was up here. "YOU ARE GOING TO GET SOMEONE KILLED."

"ARE YOU INSANE?" one of the paladin, a woman, shouted up. "THAT DRAGON IS ROGUE. HE'LL KILL YOU AND OTHERS IF HE'S NOT STOPPED."

"HE'S NOT ROGUE," Justin yelled. "HE WAS FINE UNTIL YOU SHOWED UP."

"THEN WHY DID HE KILL SOMEONE?" the paladin shouted back.

"KILL? HE DIDN'T KILL ANYONE. HE KIDNAPPED SOMEONE AND YOU MORONS ARE SHOOTING AT HIM." Kill? Was that the rumor now going around? The administration was going to be pissed. Justin could already feel the amount of paperwork building.

"THEN WHY DID HE KIDNAP SOMEONE?"

"STRESS." Justin wasn't 100% sure that that was the case, but it was a safe enough bet.

"STRESS DOES NOT CAUSE DRAGONS TO TURN ROGUE."

"No shit," Justin said under his breath. "I'M COMING DOWN THERE TO EXPLAIN. DON'T SHOOT ANYONE. Look, Sully I've got to go down there to talk with those idiots. Is it okay if I just leave you up here with him?" Justin gestured towards Nicholas. The black dragon didn't seem to really care about him or anything else. All his attention was focused back on Sully. "I don't think he'll try anything as long as you don't try and escape." Or anyone else tried to attack.

"It's fine. Just keep them from shooting him," Sully said. His hand idly stroked Nicholas's horns. The dragon closed his inner eyelid and hummed in contentment. "Always did kind of want a pet dragon."

Justin opened his mouth, thought better of saying the first three things that came to his mind, and just closed it again without a word. Right. He had better things to worry about.

Like convincing a pair of paladins not to shoot arrows at dragons.

If you read the little fragment I posted yesterday, you'll see mention of "what happened last year with the paladins." This is what they are referring to. Poor Justin. His life is such a pain sometimes.

Hooray!!

I thought I remembered reading one of those before, but I couldn't find it when I was looking the other day.

You are full of awesome!

And I am left craving more STFU. It's like Chinese food.

The benefits of knowing about when I post things (or knowing what phrases to stick into ljseek to find). It should all be in memories now.

I like writing STFU. They are short and fun. But I can already tell I need to start making notes or at least a timeline so I can keep straight what's going on when.

Bwahaha, poor Justin! I've been stalking your journal today for the fiction tidbits you have in it. Have you considered using tags on your posts? It's a much simpler way of organizing your fics and finding related posts. On another note, are there any recent Pooka, Paladin, or Irving (Unicorn/Virgin) fic available? I really enjoyed reading all those stories. Thanks!

I have thought about going to tags, but I have a feeling that I'm going to want to tag everything if I do that. And the thought of going through 7 years of entries is a little bit daunting. Also, if I tag things I tend to make up new tags as I go. At least this way, I have to reuse the same thing.

I don't think there's anything I've done recently to any of those stories. They should be all tagged. I'll check though (because I'm terrible for writing a scene or two and then forgetting about it...)

Pooka fragment

I know I posted this... somewhere. I just can't find it. I think it was a drabble request.

---

Daniel still remembered.

He was fourteen, awkward and filled with the arrogance of youth. It was during one of those impossibly hot summers that only Kansas could produce. He'd gone into the barn just to get out of the sun. Not that it was any cooler in the barn.

It was darker though, and that at least made it easier to pretend it was cooler. Daniel stood six inches inside the door, waiting for his eyes to adjust to the change in light. Dust floated in the air. The smell of horse, straw, feed and manure was over whelming.

"Why are you here?" The problem with Cian was that he walked as noiselessly as a barn cat. Daniel jumped about three feet in the air at the first word.

"You scared the shit out of me," Daniel said. He would need to watch his language later on. Couldn't drop too many cuss words. His mom would kill him. "What the fuck are you doing in here?"

"My job." Cian watched him with narrowed eyes. "Go back to the house. I have things I need to do."

"You can't order me around." Daniel crossed his arms in front of him and leaned against the barn wall. "You're the hired help. You have to do what I say."

"Do I?" Between one blink and the next Cian went from standing ten feet away to right in front of him. Towering over him. Daniel wanted to shrink away, but pride refused to let him back down. "Do you think you can control me? Do you think I'm listening to your orders?"

The next thing Daniel knew, Cian was kissing him.

Yay, backstory! So Daniel knows he has to be nervous around Cian. Minor issue - the age Daniel is in this drabble makes me wince a little bit.

The age makes me wince too a bit. I might need to go adjust that up a year. Though I find it amazing that that was the age of the Gundam Wing boys and I had no problem there. Sigh. As I get older, it seems my characters get "Too young to be doing that!"

Poor Justin indeed.

Does he ever get together with someone? I'm hoping it's someone who will help him deal with this stuff. :O

HEEE!

And then what happened?

And! What happened when the paladin clocked the demon summoner staring at his ass?

Ha, only about 2 years late with this comment.

Favorite line: "That guy is so far in the closet he's probably met Aslan," Giggling was echoing around in my head. It was distracting but good.

Adds the "Poor Justin."

Who am I?
