Wednesday, December 5th, 2007 06:01 pmI like playing Microsoft's Live Search Club. Let's get this over right up front: I know exactly what Microsoft is doing with this. They have a bunch of games that every time you take a turn at, will hit the MSN search engine thereby causing their ranking to go up. In fact, they are bribing people with the promise of prizes to do this. It's not exactly ethical, but it's damn effective.
I started playing it to get a copy of Zoo Tycoon (fun game) and have dabbled with it ever since. You can also donate a part of your winnings to the school/charity of your choice. Each point = about 1 cent. I donate 10% of everything I win to a high school. Granted they'll be getting a check for a grand total of about $6 by the time the year is out, but it's something.
About a week ago they updated the prizes they gave out, including a very nice Magellan GPS unit for something like 20,000 points. They also have a Roomba for 25,000 points ($250) which is cheaper than you can get it from the iRobot site. So that's what I'm saving up for.
Anyway, I was playing the game yesterday and was looking at the prize list when I noticed the GPS unit was gone. Odd. They'd just put it up. So I scanned upward to see that they were having some technical difficulties and the GPS unit could be had for a grand total of 0 points.
Like any good internet peon, I clicked through to see if it was for real. Said it put it in the basket. They had all my address information from when I ordered Zoo Tycoon. Got to the last step and... threw an error. Darn. I knew it was too good to be true. I had a nice laugh about it and continued on my way.
Tonight I checked my email and found out that I had a confirmation from MSN for a Magellan GPS unit which will ship to my address sometime in the next 3 months.
So who thinks I'm actually going to get a free GPS unit? Any bets?
