So last week I got a card from NC reminding me that it was time for me to renew the registration of my vehicle for Wake County. Considering I now live in Indianapolis, this was something of a problem. I've been putting off getting my car registered in Indiana for long enough. Time to see what it takes to get an Indiana license and registration for my vehicle.

Oh. My. God.

The number of hoops I have to jump through just to get my car registered is mind boggling. I have to get the VIN inspected on it? And produce a Certificate of Origin? How do I obtain that? And of course, the licensing office neglects to explain. You have got to be kidding me.

Let's not even talk about getting my driver's license. I have to get a copy of my birth certificate (which has been misplaced during one of the moves my mom made because I sure haven't seen a copy of it) from CA because that is the only form of identification the BMV will take. Sigh.

This is already proving to be more trouble than it's worth and I haven't even started yet. -_-

O_o Good luck with all that. Especially the birth certificate. Some places will only let you get a copy in person. Though... it's a nice time of year to go to CA?

Luckily, as long as I get a form notarized saying I am who I say I am, I can get a copy of my birth certificate for $17 through the mail. Which isn't terrible, but not exactly cheap either.

I have managed to find out that a Certificate of Origin is paperwork you get when you purchase your car. This should be interesting considering my mom purchased the car 13 years ago and the title has since been switched to me. Heck, I'm not even sure the dealership is still in business.

Fun times ahead.

I'm keeping my registration in NC for now I think. And it's time to renew mine as well. It can be done online and mailed to you, I think. At least that's how it is with the driver's license anyway.

I'm seriously considering it. My license doesn't expire until 2009 and the only thing I'm really worried about is getting stopped and having to explain. Then again, saying "I'm a student" is usually a pretty good explanation.

Still, I'd prefer this to be all legal like. Sigh.

o.O;; Wow. >.> You just made the three states I've lived in look totally sane by comparison... ^^;

Wait...Indiana DMV doesn't simply accept other state licenses? That's bizarre. When I went for my driver's license in DC, I had to present proof of residency, my Social Security card, my PA license, and fill out a form. They destroyed my PA license and issued me a new license.

Of course, registering Serenity was a whole different series of painful exchanges involving the dealership losing my title in the mail for a while there after forgetting to do it for a month, plus other stuff.

Anyway - ganbatte!

Oh they accept an out of state license as your second form of ID. But your primary form of ID has to be either a passport or a birth certificate. Nothing else will work. Which sucks.

Yeah, I'm not looking forward to getting my car registered. It looks to be like an adventure.

I recently changed to an Indiana license. I don't remember what other alternatives can be used but I used my old driver's license, passport, social security card and my cell phone bill that showed my billing address is in Indiana. I hated that I had to produce proof of social security since my card was lost eons ago and I've never had to use it before. That was another trip to the SS office, whereupon I found that they had recorded my birth city wrong so even though my mom told me the correct city, I had to scrounge up my birth certificate and go back again to prove I was right.

I was sad when they destroyed my old driver's license. It's the first picture I took in the U.S. My mom brought me to the DMV right after we left the airport.

You can legally drive in Indiana with another state's license up to a year after you moved.

My problem is that I don't have a passport or a copy of my birth certificate. Mostly I just need to get my car registered because everything tax wise is still for NC.

Thanks for the information on driving on my license for a year. I may need to do that. -_-

You're lucky to be able to keep it in the other state. You might as well do it as long as possible! :-) Some places like MA will give you all of 30 days of assuming permanent residency to get your car-related crap in order. Between the inspections, the proof of ownership and the licence rollover I was kept hopping for a good few days.

Who am I?
