Dense like brick

One of my cats, Kira, is dumb. No, I mean seriously dumb. As in so dumb that she sometimes comes out the other side and it seems like she's brilliant dumb.

Due to a host of health problems that came from them being abadoned as kittens, our cats have teeth problems. Major, major teeth problems. Both have had to have teeth pulled. I'm pretty sure Nadia gums her food by now. Because of it we try to keep their teeth as clean as possible. We do this by mixing in dental control kibble with their regular food (but it's high in fat so we can't just feed it to them always). We also try to control this by giving them fish flavored dental chews to get the plaque off their teeth.

The problem is that Nadia is a greedy little vulture. If I give Kira some treat and Nadia some treats, Nadia will wolf her treats down and then find Kira to eat hers as well. I wind up having to try and hide them from Nadia while making it obvious to Kira that hey, these things are for you. Hide them too well and Kira gets confused and doesn't eat them. Don't hide them well enough and Nadia scarfs them down.

Today I gave Nadia her dental chew and finally, finally was able to give Kira hers by putting it at the top of the stairs. Kira was sniffing it with obvious interest. Nadia couldn't find it. This was going to work.

So what does Kira do?

Why she deicdes that it must be a toy! Even though it smells like fish and her sister eats them all the time, it's obviously a toy. Kira then proceeds to bat the dental chew around upstairs. Then she bats it down the stairs. Then she grabs it with her paws and tosses it around. "Look! Mommy gave me a toy! And it smells and tastes like fish!"

All this playing around attracts Nadia's attention. She wanders over to see what her sister is playing with. Nadia gets one whiff of the dental chew and, I'm not kidding, gives Kira a "Are you stupid?" look. Nadia then takes the dental chew away from Kira and begins to eat it. Kira wanders over, sniff the pieces, and looks depressed. "Why did you do that? You broke the toy Mommy gave me!"

Can there possibly be another cat so stupid that she doesn't recognize food when she smells it?

While my cats aren't quite dumb enough to mistake food for a toy (though one of them has tried to jump into the TV, and licks plastic bags), I find that I have to hold Nick down in order for Jakob to get and eat all his treats. He doesn't like it much, but if I don't, he'll take Jakob's share as well as his own.

My cat crawls into plastic bags, drinks from the toilet, is afraid of imitation crab meat, licks the rims of the bathtub faucet, climbs on the doorframes and prefers eating from a people bowl over her own bowl.

I don't know how weird that is in comparison to your cat, but it's pretty strange regardless. ^^;

If I give Baxter and Ginger a treat-Baxter will wolf his treat down like I will never be feeding him again ever, and Ginger will take her treat off somewhere and guard it-for like HOURS. Not only is the treat hard as a rock by the time she decides to eat it, but it is almost always covered in ants and debris (she usually takes it outside) and yet those two little monsters fight over it like it is manna from heaven. And Baxter usually wins and steals off with the treat and Ginger just sits there for a couple of minutes and then comes in a conks out on the couch. Maybe I should take her to a puppy shrink.
