Part 1 | Part 2

I am definitely going to have to beat these stories with an editing stick at some point.

Zavier was on the bus, half way to work, when his cell phone went off. His pocket started playing a tinny version of a catchy one hit wonder that had been popular a few years ago. It was the ringtone he'd assigned to Isaac. He knew it was cheesy, but the song was about being in love and it reminded him of Isaac.

He fumbled his phone out of his pocket and flipped it open. It was only when he glanced at the clock that Zavier realized just how early it was. Why is Isaac calling me before 7:00am?

"Hey," Zavier said. "What's up?"

"Zav. Thank goodness. I didn't know if you'd be up yet." Even through the slightly crackly reception, Zavier could hear the tension in Isaac's voice. "Something's wrong with Luke and I don't know who else I can talk to."

"What's going on?" Zav asked. He'd hunched forward in his seat, dropping his voice to at least give himself the illusion of privacy. Most of the people on the bus weren't paying attention to him anyway. They were too busy trying not to fall back asleep.

"I don't know. He's locked himself in the bathroom and is being pain in the ass."

"He locked himself in the bathroom?" Zavier repeated, just to make sure Isaac had said what he'd heard. His lips quirked up in a smile. Don't start laughing. Isaac's upset and laughing will not help.

"Yeah. In the bathroom," Isaac replied. "I at least got him to talk a little bit. Something about his dragon instincts being all screwy. It didn't make much sense to me. He also said he was too hot and everything was too much. Does that sound familiar at all?"

Zavier racked his brain for a moment, trying to think. It sounded sort of familiar, but he couldn't place how. "Was he acting odd before he locked himself in the bathroom?"

"I caught him staring at me and he looked freaked out." Isaac sounded vaguely distracted, like he was trying to remember exactly what had occurred. "He was also... making dragon noises. You know. Growls and hisses and stuff. I don't even think he was aware he was doing it. Only reason I noticed is because Luke is not careful not to make them. He hates it when he does anyway and it was... obvious."

He was too hot. His instincts are making him do things. He's vocalizing. What could... Oh. Oh. Oh shit. Please already know about this Isaac. "Do you... um... do you know about dragons and rut?" Zavier practically whispered the last word. He still saw a few heads turn his way.

"Yeah, Mr. Biff pulled me aside on day and explained... Luke's in rut?"

At that moment, Zavier mentally took back every mean, nasty thought he'd ever had about the flight instructor and health teacher. After all, he was the reason Zavier wasn't going to have to explain rut to his boyfriend on a crowded bus. "Yes. Luke's probably in rut. At least that's what it sounds like. I guess this hasn't happened before?"

"No. I mean, I'd know if it had happened before, right? Fuck. Why the hell did he lock himself in the bathroom?" Isaac asked.

"Because it's Luke." And Luke being Luke, there was no telling how much of his actions were his instincts and how much was his contrary reactions to his instincts. Then because, Zavier had to be sure. "You know what to expect?"

"Yeah. Worse will be the first three days. He'll eat, sleep, and want sex. Don't let him around other dragons. Don't leave him for very long. Calling for pizza is good if you haven't stocked up on food."

Zavier couldn't help but grin. "Mr. Biff tell you the last one?"

"Yeah," Isaac replied.

"That's the reason no pizza place around will hire a dragon as a driver." Isaac chuckled. Silence descended and Zavier had to bite his lip. I want to ask him if he wants me to come over. But that would be awkward.

Awkward because Zavier knew that if he went over there with Luke in rut, he'd go into rut as well. Dealing with one dragon in rut was going to be rough enough on Isaac. Two would probably drive him insane. And then there was Luke. They'd been getting along better lately, but dragons in rut sometimes got territorial. That wouldn't be good.

"So..." Isaac said when the silence had stretched too long. "Do you think you'll be able to come over on Friday?"

He did some mental math. "That would be four days from now? Luke should be over the worse but... just call me. If he's doesn't feel up to, it'll be fine. I can see you guys Saturday or come over Sunday."

"Okay." Isaac sounded disappointed. Zavier swallowed back his own disappointment. He enjoyed spending time with Isaac. "I have no idea what I'm going to do about work."

"Call them up and just say that your bonded has gone into rut. Most places that employ dragons understand," Zavier said. He looked up suddenly to see that his was the next stop. "I have to go. My stop is next."

"Thank you for being there, Zav. I love you." Even having heard it before, the words send a little shiver down Zavier's spine.

"You too," Zav said. He reached up and pulled the cord. The bus obediently slowed. "Call me if you need me."

"I will."

The wind held the first bite of fall in it. It cut through Zavier's coat as he stepped off the bus. He didn't mind though. In fact, he welcomed the cold. Because now he was going to be spending all day long trying not to think about the fact that Luke was in rut and was probably, at this very moment, touching Isaac. A lot. He was probably using his tongue to...

Zavier groaned and tried very hard not think about it.

This is going to be a long, long day.
