After some digging, I found that I'd posted an earlier bit of this story here. It's the second story listed. For some reason I decided to write one of the later scenes. All you really need to know is that stuff happens between this scene and the previously posted part.

Also, Moryn needs to learn not to climb into people's beds unexpectedly. XD

In the past two days he'd become a divine messenger of light, told the Sea Dragon King what he really thought of him, cursed one of the royal advisors, bequeathed his kingdom to one of his nephews, and probably screwed up plans for at least half of the sea kingdoms. He also hadn't slept since he'd woken up changed in the grotto. Moryn was tired.

The moon had already risen and was well on its way to setting when Moryn finally dragged himself onto the beach. The sand grated against his scales, but the sea dragon ignored it. High tide was beginning to ebb. Moryn wanted to beach himself far enough that when he changed he wouldn't get soaked.

Sea dragon's were not made to beach themselves, but he managed. It was awkward to say the least. Moryn couldn't help but think of flopping fish or worms writhing out of the ground. He hissed in frustration.

Finally, with one last heave of his fins, Moryn judged himself to be far enough out of the water. He called his power to him, not expecting the strength of it. It rolled over him without control. Even two days after waking he still wasn't use to be a divine messenger.

His second attempt went much better. Light gathered around him in a wash of heat. When it faded it left him in human form. Without fins. Without scales. Without a tail.

And also, without clothes.

"I'd forgotten about that," Moryn said to himself, just to hear his voice. It was rough from disuse, but still familiar. Which was a good sign. Going to sleep in the grotto could mean the loss of days, weeks, months, even years. There was no telling how much time had passed, but at least he still sounded like himself.

Part of him wondered if he looked any different than before. In sea dragon form, some of his scales had been replaced by rows of pearls. It was irrefutable proof that he was a messenger of the light. Had something similar happened to his human form?

Moryn pulled a lock of his hair forward. It was the same blue-black he remembered, tangled from the salt in the air. His skin looked the same: a pale, almost alabaster white. His fingers were long and his fingernails were longer. He'd have to trim them before they chipped and broke. Two arms, two legs, and all human male parts where they should be. If there was a difference in the way he looked, it was somewhere he couldn't see.

"Enough admiring yourself. You need clothes."

The night wasn't particularly warm, though it wasn't cold either. It could be spring or fall, which was disconcerting considering that he'd gone to sleep at the height of summer. Moryn left the beach and headed towards the faint lights of the beach cottages. Experience had taught him that if he looked long enough, he'd find someone who was careless with their clothes.

Heat radiated up from the asphalt roads, a stark contrast to the cool night sands. Moryn stuck to the shadows as best he could. Few of the beach houses seemed to be occupied. No tourists then. It had to be the off season. That meant he was less likely to run into someone wandering around in the early morning hours. Unfortunately, it also meant he had less chance of finding clothing.

Luck was on his side though. Three blocks later Moryn spotted laundry hanging on a line that hadn't been brought it. He jumped a fence and pulled a T-shirt and swim trunks off the line. The T-shirt was some dark color but fit. The swimtrunks were too big and he had to cinch the tie way too tight to make them stay up. Two houses further produce a pair of flip-flops that fit reasonably well.

Now all he had to do was head over to the beach house that Colt's grandfather owned. There at least he could sleep in reasonable safety. He'd deal with everything else in the morning.

It was a twenty minute walk in the other direction to get to the beach house. Moryn was so tired he was stagger by the time it came into view. In the moonlight, the house looked gray even though he knew that it was actually blue. There were two cars in the driveway, meaning that at least some of the elemental masters were there. The SUV belonged to Canace, but he didn't recognize the smaller car.

The stairs were almost more than he could manage and Moryn tripped going up them. He caught himself before he fell though. Just a little bit longer and then he could sleep. The door was locked so he pulled the third board from the end of the porch up. Underneath was the key. Once Moryn had unlocked the door, he replaced it and the board.

The inside of the house was dark even with the moonlight coming in. He hoped that he could still find his way around. There was a pile of shoes near the front door, and Moryn automatically took his off and added to the pile. Wave came trotting out of the darkness and Moryn reached down to scratch the cat behind his ears. Then he headed up the stairs, being sure to step over the second step that always groaned.

At the top of the stairs, Moryn turned left. Second door down would be Kenan's room. It's where he always slept before: most nights on the floor, though occasionally the dark master would let him share the bed. That was always nice.

Moryn pushed open the door, stepped inside the room, and softly shut it behind him. The blinds were drawn closed so it was dark. Even Moryn's eyes, which were better than most even in human form, couldn't penetrate it. He would have to brave the room on feel alone.

After tripping three times on shoes, a suitcase, and what might have been a book, Moryn finally made it to the bed. He was not sleeping on the floor. Given how much stuff he'd tripped over, he wasn't even sure he could sleep on the floor. Kenan seemed to be pressed against the far side of the bed – something so familiar that it hurt – and Moryn had plenty of room to lie down. He could probably even do it without waking Kenan.

Slowly, the sea dragon settled his weight on the mattress. Kenan's breathing didn't change. Good. His whole body ached with the need for sleep. He arranged himself so that he wasn't touching Kenan and closed his eyes. Finally. Sleep.

Everything else could wait till tomorrow.

Moryn woke up when he a sharp kick flung him out of bed and sent him sprawling to the floor.

"What the fuck are you doing in my bed?" Kenan yelled. Moryn groaned. He really had not had enough sleep to be dealing with this. Therefore he said the first thing that came to his mind.

"Sleeping."
