Just some bits of story that didn't quite make it into the [livejournal.com profile] snail_mail_porn version.

Ransom stopped in the middle of what sorting his rubies, hissing and rubbing at his breast bone. Pace looked up at the sound. He marked his place in the book he was reading with a strip of ribbon.

"Are you okay?"

"Yes..." Ransom said uncertainly. "No. I don't know. The place where I took the scale out still bothers me."

"Even when you're human? Is that... normal?"

"No." Ransom sighed, looking at the rubies he'd already sorted by color and those he had yet to get to. Pace waited expectantly. He could feel it. The dragon took a particularly red ruby, a pigeon's blood ruby, and rolled it around his palm. "When I pulled the scale from me, there was blood on it. Blood calls to blood. It's sympathetic magic at its simplest. That's why it hurts."

"Is there any way to stop it?"

"Do you want to go ask the Princess for it back?" Ransom asked in a too sweet voice. Pace paled at the suggestion. "I thought not. Don't worry. It will fade over time."

The dragon hunter did not look convinced.

"Why do you call me dragon hunter?"

Ransom was sitting on the floor, carefully untangling several chains that had gotten knotted together. He didn't even look up from his delicate work. "You hunt dragons. Therefore you are a dragon hunter."

"I have other duties than slaying dragons. Therefore, I'm a knight," Pace replied.

"Maybe," Ransom conceded. "But the only duties that affect me are the ones involving hunting dragons, so you're a dragon hunter."

Pace's laughter was startling loud. Ransom looked at his like he had lost his mind, but that wasn't anything unusual. The dragon often gave Pace that look.
