Attack of the grandma house!

miome and I did our first round of house hunting yesterday (we both got way too dehydrated: note to self, bring more water). Most of them were pretty "meh" with two possibilities. But you don't want to hear about that. You want to hear about... THE GRANDMA HOUSES.

There were two Grandma houses, though one is being considered a possibility by us because while it's very dated, the layout is nice, the price is lower, and we could work around (and upgrade) the interior. The other grandma house... there is nothing to recommend it.

First, everything in it was dated. From the brown shag carpeting to the harvest gold stove, from the "vintage" bathroom tiles to the floor to ceiling wood paneling: dated, dated, dated. Even the furnishings the owners had left for the staging looked like they had been pulled straight from a 60's or 70's catalog. It was the house time forgot.

The layout for this thing was terrible as well. I felt like I was walking from one cave room to another. The wood paneling didn't help. There were also inexplicable remodeling decisions: like the wall to the bedroom in the basement that had to have a cut out in it because of where the water cut-off valve was located. Why did you put the wall there? Bizarre.

Then there was the location. It was a corner lot and one of the streets it faced was extremely busy. You could hear the traffic going by. The lack of landscaping wasn't an issue for me, but the tiny backyard was. The final straw was the asking price: it was at the absolute top of our range. There was no way this house was worth that. Heck, we'd just seen a really nice, newly renovated house for the same price just a few blocks over!

So yeah, definitely passing on that one. Miome and I think we're going to go out one more time to look next week and then make a decision. We've got some possibilities, though right now nothing that jumps out at us as being perfect. Another week of looking will help us see what else is out there.
