We had a good 5-6 inches fall over night, and will probably get another 2-3 inches today. Of course, as required by my city regulations, I had to go shovel the sidewalk in front of my house. I also gave the stink eye to everyone who walked on it before I shoveled it. Why? Because when they walk on it, it compresses the snow into the sidewalk, and it's twice as hard to get off. The snow hasn't even stopped falling! Stop walking on it!

Which is totally unreasonable, I know, but I just spent 30 minutes chipping compressed snow off the sidewalks with a shovel. I'm allowed to be annoyed.

We also had to cancel some reservations we had for afternoon tea, because there's no way we're getting downtown today. I am annoyed. Currently, they are predicting another snow storm to come through next weekend as well. Double annoyed. Maybe later this month we can go?

Finally, I have written 20,000 words of the absolute worst story I have ever written. It's terrible. I'm loving writing it. No editing. No worrying about consistency. No research. Just me writing and writing. I'm trying out a couple of new techniques to see if they work from me (including a new word count tracker, a new method of planning stories, and some new writing styles). All of which require me to have a larger work to really stress test. So I decided to write a half-assed romance novel based in a fantasy world. I might have crap at the end, but I'll have had fun writing it.

Oh that explains it

Thursday and Friday of last week, I felt terrible.

I would go to work, come home, and just have no energy. None. I couldn't write. I couldn't do exercises. All I wanted to do was be warm and not think. Even playing Youtube videos took too much effort. I went to bed at 8pm and woke up still tired.

I could not figure out what was going on.

Then I started my period 10 days early.

Which makes sense. If I'm going to get sick or feel like I have no energy, it's going to be then. Today I feel much better, but I'm still going to take it easy. I do need to catch up on my writing though. I had plans and darn it, I'm going to stick to them.

It's nice to have a explanation though.

Thanks to the wonderful Kittyknowsthings, on my Hobbit fic An Unexpected Landing. As anyone who has followed me for awhile knows, it is super easy to get me to post more of what I'm writing. This is another of my Hobbit fanfics. It's unfinished. I was going to post it on Tumblr, but then I realize even this first section is almost 5,000 words. The entire thing is almost 11,000 words long, and I'm not done. When did it get so long? It's set in modern times, but all the races and cultures of Middle Earth exist.

Editing cat has been sitting on my desk (which is the only computer with two monitors) as I finish up the last of the second round of edits this weekend. He’s been doing such helpful things as standing in front of the screen, purring till I take a break and pet him, and pawing at me when I’m not paying him enough attention. He loves it when I edit things.

Fun fact: Archive of Our Own keeps a record of your entire reading history. I decided that I would go all the way back to the first thing I read in my history (I read things before I made an account so those are lost to time) to kudos fics I didn't kudos, bookmark those fics that I didn't realize at the time would stay with me, and see if any authors I read multiple fics from had written more things I wanted to read.

It's been... interesting. I made my account during my hardcore Teen Wolf phase. Like seriously, the first 10 pages were SOLID Teen Wolf fanfic. Thank goodness a random Avengers fic finally broke that streak. I love me some Teen Wolf but damn past self.

Going through the Teen Wolf authors I read, I noticed two things:

1) A lot of them stopped writing after Teen Wolf. Some of them only wrote Teen Wolf, but a lot of them wrote stuff before that and just... stopped. Was Teen Wolf a fanfic author destroyer or what? I feel sad because some of these people were good authors and I would have loved to read more by them.

2) After Teen Wolf, a large number of authors then started writing Hockey RPF. Like a SCARY number of them. I... don't see the connection there? Like what led people to get interested in Teen Wolf only to jump to Hockey RPF? Whatever it was, it happened to a lot of authors. I did wonder if maybe they wound up in the Check, Please! and then wound up writing Hockey RPF (which is another trajectory I see in fic authors), but I would expect to see MORE Check, Please! fic if that was the case.

It's just... been really interesting to go back through and see what people are doing now. I'm going to continue going through my history. I imagine I'll have some more interesting observations while I do.

Now, it is time to do what I always do on New Year's Eve: go to bed at a reasonable hour and wake up to a new year. Besides, if I don't give the cats their evening snack in the next five minutes, I have the feeling they will murder me in my sleep. They are already annoyed at me for putting flea medication on them earlier.

Happy New Year!

Things I want/need to do today:

  • Take out trash

  • Change air filter on furnace

  • Do two hours of editing

  • Write 800 words on ridiculous project

  • Work on fanfic - Wound up working on another fic, but at least it's writing

  • Apply flea medication to cats

Working on the continuation of my weird Undertale fic Never Wake the Sleeping. Only this time it's from the UF!Sans and UF!Papyrus's point of view. Because I figured if I'm going to cram them into a coffin in the basement, we should at least get their side of the story

Clumsiness strikes again. This time the victim was an entire jar of spaghetti sauce that did a nose dive onto the kitchen floor. I'm just glad the cats didn't decide to investigate while I yelled for Miome. I couldn't move because I was barefoot. Barefoot + glass = not good.

Editing

I am eyeball deep in the second round of edits for my story. The good news is, I don't have to re-write the entire first part again. The bad news is, I still have to do some rewriting. Nothing too bad so far but I'm only about 1/4 of the way through. Thank goodness I had some time off so I don't have to try and cram edits in around my normal work hours.

The thing is, as much as I find some of these edits annoying, it really, really does make for a better story. Even if I don't agree with them. I at least am now aware that someone picked up on something in certain places and it allows me to fill in the gaps even if I do it in other places.

I'd prefer doing all my own editing with no commentary, but I know that that doesn't work. One, because I am even slower at editing than I am at writing. Two, because a lot of times I cannot get out of the story enough to see the weak spots. Still, this will never be my favorite pastime.

The entire neighborhood smells like weed.

How… how do you make an entire neighborhood smell like a stoner’s college dormroom? How much marijuana do you have to be burning to make an entire street stink like a Spencer’s gifts? I don’t mean the faint whiff of a sweet scent that makes you remember someone you knew in High School either. The air around my house smelled like a goddamn bong.

I mean… really? REALLY? Did someone go whole hog on their stash for the holidays? Did they decide they wanted to be completely wasted by New Year’s and needed to start early? Did someone try to hot box their entire house and forget how a fireplace chimney works?

Sweet JesusI hate the smell of weed.

Cross stitch pattern, 7/8th of the way finished, in dark red thread

Cross stitch progress! This is the piece I’ve been working on and off for about a year and a half. Not because it’s particularly complicated. I just put it down to work on other things or because I screw up and have to take stitches out and then need a break from it.

There’s actually more done than shown (I worked on it while at the in-laws), but I hate taking pictures of my pieces when you can see the half-done stitches.

The reason I love this pattern (and patterns like it) is because you can work it up in sections. I tend to break this pattern down into 1/8ths as you can see from the missing 1/8 of the pattern. I also love monochrome patterns like this because I can focus on the pattern and not have to worry about keeping track of which thread colors I still need. I usually also have a pattern using multi-colors going at the same time so I can switch between the two.

Ultimately, this will be one of three similar pieces for my kitchen. The next one will be in dark gray. Not sure what color I’ll do the third one it. I have the pattern already picked out. I do know that the next piece I will back with some muslin or white cotton so that the threads are not quite as visible through the fabric.

I am back from the in-laws. For some reason this visit, I could not sleep more than 5 hrs a night. Which was not fun. I came home today and immediately took a 3hr long nap. Now I feel more human and less like a zombie.

Home is where your computer automatically connects to your wi-fi.

I hate when I'm working on a cross stitch piece and I realize I put in an extra stitch in the pattern like 50 stitch ago. It means taking out way too much to fix it. Then my thread knotted, snapped, and I wound up having to take out even more stitches to deal with that mess. Sigh. If this wasn't the only piece I brought with me to work on while I was with family, I would put it aside until I'm no longer annoyed with it. I knew I should have brought something else as well.

What is it about food at work functions that makes some people's brains turn off?

I was always taught a couple of simple rules for catered events, like work functions. Don't go through the line a second time until everyone has had a chance to go through once so that people get a chance to eat. Don't put things on your plate and then return it to the communal dish. Don't scrape stuff off or pick stuff out of your food there in line. If stuff is being served by a person and is not take as much as you want (usually done to make sure everyone gets some or when there is a limited amount for some food like a vegetarian option), don't try to get multiple helpings.

Things I saw at the catered work event today:

- Someone spotting a couple of unmanned dishes while one of the servers were helping someone else and adding a serving of ham, a serving of turkey, and a serving of fish to their plate which already had two serving of beef. This was in addition to the entire plate full sides they had. They probably had enough food on their for three people.

- Someone picking out the tomatoes from their salad and putting it back in the salad bowl.

- Someone using the cake server to scrape the icing off pieces of cake and leaving the icing on the cake stands for people to maneuver around.

- Someone going through the desert line four times before most people had even gone through once. This person also got multiple slices of the various deserts each time.

I mean really? Really? Come on guys.

Digging through entries where I only used a tag once, I found the first part of the then unnamed original story. It has since gained a name and several additional pages. So I figured I'd post the next part just to fill out the tags a bit.

I am out of socks.

I just started a load of laundry.

Did that load of laundry contain any socks?

No, no it did not.

My sock...

Youngest cat has a thing about left over food. It absolutely must be covered once he is done with it. Just scratching at the floor around the plate with the left over food isn't enough. No. There has to be something on it. And if there is nothing around that can be pulled onto the plate, youngest cat will go find something.

Unfortunately, what he usually finds is socks or wash clothes or even T-shirts in laundry basket that haven't yet been folded and put away. He will pull them out and drop them over his food. That's what happened this morning. I, being half awake, picked the sock up and instead of putting it in the laundry hamper with the dirty laundry, put it back in the clean laundry basket.

I know this because later, when I was more awake and getting dressed, I grabbed a pair of dress socks out of the clean laundry. I hung these over the end of the bed while I finished getting ready. Suddenly, House Panther is right there and giving me the "YOU HAVE FOOD? IT IS FOR ME?" routine. I'm totally confused. Until... I remember the sock. One sniff confirms that one of the dress socks smells VERY strongly of cat food.

Needless to say, I found a different pair to wear. I also placed those socks in the dirty laundry hamper like I should have the first time. House Panther was very disappointed that there was no food, despite the fact he'd been fed less than 20 minutes before.

Cats.

I mentioned that I went into business and quickly discovered that it was not for me. What I should have said is I don't mind doing it part-time, but cannot handle it being my full-time, main income producing gig. This means I have a few clients that I have a contract with that use me on an "as needed" basis. It's occasional work that lets me keep my skills strong in ways that my normal job doesn't.

Since I'm on an as needed basis and because I have a odd set of very technical skills, I can charge a lot per hour. And I do. This drives away anyone who doesn't really need my skillset AND ensures that the clients that stay take my time seriously.

I always feel a bit weird about charging people so much just to talk with me on the phone for an hour about projects that may or may not happen.

But not weird enough to not bill them for it.

Cats

One of my cats is on a prescription diet. I'm hoping it's as temporary as the vet thinks it will be, because with the cost of the food, he should be pooping gold nuggets. This makes feeding time extra interesting because we have a) the youngest who is on prescription food who occasionally takes over an hour to eat, b) creamsicle cat who is already on medication to encourage him to eat and now eats a normal amount at a normal pace but is not adverse to having a bit more if its available just so he can puke it up later in the most inconvenient spot, and c) our house panther who is the cat equivalent of a vacuum. What this means is that all three cats have to be fed separately.

I swear, it's like playing musical cats. Feed creamsicle cat in the kitchen his food, like a normal cat. Lock the house panther with his food in the bathroom. Then take the youngest his food upstairs and feed him in the locked bedroom. I can't feed him downstairs because he's become super obsessed with the outdoor cats AND because if he takes too long to eat, creamsicle cat with scarf down his food as well. And then puke.

Once that's done I get exactly 60 glorious seconds of quiet. After 60 seconds, house panther realizes that he is locked in a room and WHAT IF HE IS LEFT THERE FOREVER? This is when the caterwauling starts. Mrr-ow. Mrrr-ow. As soon as he is released, he heads straight for any food bowl he can spot and immediately starts licking it clean.

My next stop is upstairs to see if the youngest has eaten his food. If he has, great!, all is well. If he hasn't, then I have to keep the other two out for an hour or two to see if he's interested in eating them. Sometimes he is. Sometimes he isn't. At 13lbs it's not like he's wasting away to nothing, but I would prefer he eat the food especially since it's expensive.

Thus concludes the circus that is feeding time at my house.
