Wow. I really missed out in school. I learned about gods such as Osiris, Thoth, Set, Anubis and Isis but somehow didn't hear anything about the Egyptian god Min. I can't imagine why I wasn't taught about him in either elementary or high school. It is a mystery.

Best Egyptian god name goes to Huh. I have a sinking feeling I'm going to have to name a deity that in my stories. And maybe give him a sister called Oh and a maybe a partner named Ah-hah.

Indeed. It has nothing to do with Min holding a phalus and a flail now, does it. Or with the fact Egyptians were genrally open about sexuality issues and modern-day society is still not getting the point that teaching kids about it is not going to harm them in any way.

In Romania, they waited until college to teach about those obscure fertility and androgynous gods. XD

I didn't take any classes on religion in college, so I have to find out all this stuff on my own. Heck, I have several very large books on mythology and they don't even mention this. I'm glad the internet will give me all the good stuff.

I was a History Major for two years, that's why we were taught about it. We had a semester reserved to Ancient World history, and our professor at the time (may he rest in peace) saw it fit to focus on the generally-deemed "important" cultures (persian, Egyptian, Greek, Latin). he was also more interested in the cultural aspects rather than historical data, and we loved him for that.

I recently ran into Min's name again in a documentary on Alexander the Great I've translated as homework, actually. Though my favourite is still Mafdet, Bastet's predecessor. (What can I say? Cat person!)

I like Bastet too (and her smaller incarnation, Bast). Kitties for the win! I had not heard of Mafdet (goes to read).

If the Egyptian gods/goddesses was still worshiped, I was imagined Sekhmet (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sekhmet) would be the goddess of college guys. Let's destroy things and then go get drunk! WOO!

Mafdet is the oldest kitty goddess, apparently. But generally, it's no wonder the Egyptians worshipped cats. I mean, my aunt's own kitty owns me in pretty much al possible ways. *snuggles Bendis*

gah. Now I want to watch this stupid cartoon series called Mummies Alive! again... and it's not available anywhere. *pouts*

I liked it as a kid. It's ridiculously inaccurate, historically speaking, but it was fun. XD

I don't even get the excuse of being a kid and liking it. I think I was in college when I watched episodes of it. Terribly inaccurate, and yet strangely fascinating.

*LOL* It was fun, in a brainless sort of way. And I must say, I kept hoping for Jakal and Nefer-Tina (urgh, Americanized name there *shivers*) to get together. Though Jakal/Rath would have been fun also.

There's a common ending to the old myths and legends. Then Christianity came along and deemed it obscene.

On a somewhat related topic, recently I was talking about modern day Greece with a friend of mine, and I discovered Turkish Oil Wrestling (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ya%C4%9Fl%C4%B1_g%C3%BCre%C5%9F). The wrestlers train in close contact (http://www.flickr.com/photos/designldg/sets/72157603717562864/), and as a result they have no qualms about resting together between matches (http://www.flickr.com/search/?q=turkish+oil+wrestling).

If when you said partner you also meant they'd be having sex, that would be some really funny exclamations RIGHT THERE.

What kills me is that it's a type of lettuce that when you touch it, gives of white liquid. Hmmm... I wonder why it was considered an aphrodisiac. XD

Quoted from Wikipedia:

The symbols of Min were the white bull, a barbed arrow, and a bed of lettuce, that the Egyptians believed to be an aphrodisiac, as Egyptian lettuce was tall, straight, and released a milk-like substance when rubbed, characteristics superficially similar to the penis.
